Default Installing Apache on Windows XP home

Hi, Last night I successful installed Apache on my Windows XP system. I then followed DevShed.com's tutorial on altering the config file, and after that I received errors. Thinking I had messed it all up, I decided to start again and uninstall it and reinstall it. I have now done this several times, but each time I try to reinstall it, I receive the following message:
Syntax error on line 228 of config/httpd. DocumentRoot must be a directory.

The error log reads:

[Mon Oct 31 23:39:06 2005] [notice] Apache/2.0.55 (Win32) configured -- resuming normal operations
[Mon Oct 31 23:39:06 2005] [notice] Server built: Oct 9 2005 19:16:56

[Tue Nov 01 00:25:20 2005] [notice] Child 1708: Released the start mutex
[Tue Nov 01 00:25:21 2005] [notice] Child 1708: Waiting for 250 worker threads to exit.

[Tue Nov 01 00:25:21 2005] [notice] Child 1708: Child process is exiting

I notice that the logs are referring back to an install I did last night. Does this mean that I haven't managed to uninstall everything correctly. I went through the correct procedure through the uninstall feature.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

All the best

Vicky

What does line 228 of the config say?

Looks like a problem with:
C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs/index.html

Does that file exist?

Hi Steve0

Thank you for your response. It appears that when I uninstall, and reinstall, it's not overwriting the config file, and therefore what I have on my system is the one which I botched up. So Line 228 is my amended location ie.

DocumentRoot "C:Documents and SettingsMyusernamehereMy DocumentsMyWebsitelocalhostwww"

instead of

DocumentRoot "C:Program FilesApache GroupApache2htdocs".

And you're right, C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs/index.html doesn't seem to exist. A whole load of others do, eg. index.html.ca, index.html.de etc, but not plain old index.html.

Any ideas on how I can rectify all this? It seems clear that when I'm uninstalling and re-installing, it's not wiping the system and starting afresh. I feel confident that if I could start off with a clean slate, I could make it work!

Many thanks

Vicky

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe there is a "default" config file. Unless you have changed that you should be able to select all in the default file and copy and paste it into the normal config file. That should get the config file back to the original version.
