Default A-Record setup

I have been told to set up an A-Record. I understand the purpose etc., however I am really clueless as how to set it up. I thought it was simply a matter of setting up a sub domain in cpanel, but apparently not.
This is most likely one of those things that is so simple it confuses me.
Please help....

Normally you need root access to the server in order to set up an A record.

If all you're doing is setting up a sub-domain in cPanel, the A record will be created automatically
