.Net questions??

My designer is refreshing our checkout process and has asked to use .net We are presently written in ASP and I am not sure what .Net is or why we would use it. I have read a few articles and I cannot seem to get through all the marketing hype to understand why he would be asking me the questions.

Any help in understanding .NET would be appreciated
