Default News Portal

Hello people at WebproWorld.

Ok, I have a project to create, is technology news portal where there will be fresh news every single day with the ability to let the users post their comments for each news. After I have created a decent size community, I will add the forums section.

Now, my question is:

As I am a complete 110% rookie in Data Base managing, and with no programming capabilities, as I am a Graphic Web Designer, is there an application that can help me build this site? I have seen vBulletin work but for the forums part, and although I understand some programming and Data Base concepts, I don´t know how to manage one.

I´m in the research phase of the project, and I´m really looking forward to brign this idea to life.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Ricardo,

Probably what you are looking for is a cms solution.
Have a look at this section

The one that I recommend right now is Mambo.
It's free, allows you to add articles and develop pages right from a browser and has a way to integrate with a forum (phpbb)

One question, the Technology News portion, how are you getting the feed on the news itself or are these hand edited articles that you will be feeding into the site yourself?

While Mambo (or even Drupal) are excellent choices for content management, a portal solution such as one of the Nukes (phpNuke being one of the more popular) would probably suffice for your particular needs. They are designed to function like you are suggesting.

Visit OpenSourceCMS and on the left hand menu scroll down to the Portal section. You can click on any solution they have there and Test Drive it. You will also have full Admin access.

Mambo and Drupal are there also. Try those out and get a good feel for the differences between those and the Nuke-type portals.

These are all Open Source projects (ie free software) with a variety of features. Some of them come with very large community programmers backing them also, which means tons of support and plug-ins or added functionality (hacks .... hehehe).

Play around there for a couple of days, and if you have any more questions just drop back in here and ask away!
