THere is no such thing as a free .NET server. They are too expensive to build and maintain to offer for free.

Doesn't MS Personal Web Server support ASP? Maybe not .NET...no idea. And doesn't IIS come with XP? Think you just have to make sure you install it off the disk. Then you can test to your hearts content on your own desktop.

My understanding is that there is a free developer's version of SQL Server as well, that you can run localhost.

personal web server was a pre NT component.
after ME (whincing at the thought) both 2000 and XP use IIS but you are limited to one site at a time the way round this is to have http ://localhost/site name

For developing purposes, you can use web matrix and it's built in IDE. Nice lite alternative to Visual Studio, and it's free. You can access the internal server locally ONLY. (I've tried otherwise). As for a regular server.. I'm almost positive there was one that you could use to deploy with a CD. (sort of like those Flash CDs, except with asp.NET) I read it in another programming book (I no longer have it). Look in google, I'm sure you'll find it.

I do .NET on my local laptop.
You can run your app on XP PRO or Windows 2000 Pro running IIS and the .NET framework. I code in VS.NET but web matrix is great as a free product. XP Home does not come with IIS nor can you install it.

I love .NET

Hope that helps

I also suggest using ASP.Net web matrix for your testing server if you don't have IIS, and if you use XP Home and don't have XP Pro. Also I've heard that some people can get IIS on XP Home but you have to do a lot of things to get this done, which could mess up your PC.
