oscommerce users/developers - hosting company recommendation
Help!
I am in the process of developing an online store using oscommerce, but my current host has many of the key php functions necessary for proper functioning and administration disabled (running php in safe mode?)
I want a windows server that I have configuration control over. php and mysql support, ssl support.
Anyone developing/has developed an oscommerce store that could recommend a hosting company, one that is "developer-friendly" instead of "12-yr old publishing a canned website with front page" friendly (no offense meant) that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
TIA,
Alicia

www.sectorlink.com is who I have a dedicated box with. They're pretty straight up and will let you sp a lot of things in pretty much any way you want so long as resources aren't being sucked dry (and they'll tell you when resources are being used up).
I don't know from a PHP standpoint, but from an ASP/MS-SQL (or Access if my client doesn't have the coin) standpoint, they've been incredibly reliable and stable. One hard drive crash in two years (and stuff happens, so I can deal with that). That's not bad at all.
They also have a really good tech support trouble ticket system deal where they answer most problems within 1 hour. They even answered a question of mine within 60 seconds. I haven't seen any host do that...ever. That rocked.

LOL
Yeah, wouldn't be a bad idea at all to choose a host that IS familiar with web applications and development.
Why would you want a Windows server? OsCommerce runs better off Linux.

Did you want it in safe mode or you didn't.
Better to have it turned off. I think most hosts have it turned off now, because of security issues

p.s.
as far as windows v linux, the only reason i say windows is because i have been administering iis web servers for many years, and thats what i am familiar with
though i must say, the more i read and the more development i do, linux is looking better and better

My pleasure! Just out of curiosity, I'd like to see what you're working on.
And forgive me for being incredibly chauvinist (albeit completely unintentional) but I don't see very many female web developers these days. In fact, among the resumes I've read as a result of people applying for freelance work on my site (well over 1000 now), I haven't seen a true female developer once.
So good on you for leading the way for your gender. I'd like to see some more just like you, to throw a fresh perspective into development issues (I'm even trying to train one of the designers who works for me, although she seems somewhat reluctant to become as geeky as I am...quite understandable. :) )

- I will be happy to forward you a link once I get switched over to my new host and have things presentable again.

- Very interesting, I had no idea we were so rare, but now that you mention it, I can't so that I know any either.

- Thank you :) I will do my best!)
