First of all you can create account on social networking sites and add links to your sites on your profiles then every social site has its own features so for example you can creat a fan page for your site on Facebook.

To my current understanding. No... and Yes...

backlinks which will be crawled and counted towards your page rank will not count behind password protected websites like facebook.

Myspace encrypts and redirects their links so no value to my knowledge is passed along that way either.

Youtube makes use of the nofollow tag to block page rank value as well.

You will still get referrals of course.

Social networking web site likes twitter, you can add update for your web site, it will show your back link also

it depends some social bookmarking sites are nofollow. However, submitting your website to nofollow won't hurt your website and it is being exposed very fast as google loves to crawl social sites.

I don't think so especially digg or stumbleupon is totally for traffic, they wont pass link juice to your website

The social sites are more about to generate traffic rather than getting backlinks.

Social networks only can help you in generating traffics. For back link purpose social networks are not useful because most of the social networking & bookmarking sites use nofollow tags.
