Default Please review my new commerce site

Please have a look around and let me know what you think of the site. It's only been live for a couple of weeks, and I'm keen to get some fresh views on it.

Lime-green isn't my first choice when thinking of chocolates, cookies and brownies - Warmer colors like tans, browns, creams would be.

Just a few things.

1. On your main page. Your footer looks off. Viewed with Firefox.
2. On your contact us. I would add a web form for general inquiries.
3. SEO friendly URL's would really help.
4. I would remove "[more info]" and show a brief description in it's place.
5. On your new pokes and top pokes pages I would change the layout to match the rest of the site.
6. Upselling of products would help with sales. I did see it on one or two pages, but it should be on every product page.
7. Your site is left aligned. I think centered would look better.
8. Viewing your code you have <styles> throughout your code. These should be removed and placed in a .css file.
9. Why is your H1 tag a linked image with alt text and not your page heading on your main page?
10. Why can I sign out when I am not signed in?
11. Since you seemed to be geared for local sales and not international I have to wonder why you are not on a co.uk and why you do not have a printable order form.
12. Not sure if it is me, but your site seems to load fine at times, and then just dies.
13. What is the difference between links and resources?
14. The placement of the price on your cart pages, along with 2 add to basket buttons? The price would look better under the description with only one add button, and maybe a quantity box.
15. Titles on text links to help with accessibility.
16. On your main products pages, like chocolates, under your H1 tag you have a bunch of keywords. How does this help me? I was expecting some sort of description.
17. On the about us page you have links just thrown in under the text.

Final thoughts.

Personally I did not like the color scheme of the green and red. The consistency of the site did not look right along with some of the layout, as mentioned above. I think it is a good start, but needs to be tuned.

I tried to look at your site and all i got was...

Quote:
1406 - Data too long for column 'browser_string' at row 1

INSERT INTO `supertracker` (`ip_address`, `browser_string`, `country_code`, `country_name`, `referrer`,`referrer_query_string`,`landing_page`, `exit_page`,`time_arrived`,`last_click`) VALUES ('100.100.100.100','Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; GTB6; Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) ; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; Media Center PC 4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648; .NET CLR 3.5.21022; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729)','', '', 'http://www.webproworld.com/submit-your-site-review/89444-please-review-my-new-commerce-site.html', '','/','/index.php','2009-08-20 08:09:36','2009-08-20 08:09:36')

[TEP STOP]
Which looks like some sort of database error, ideally you shoud trap errors and show the user a friendly error page like...

An error has been detected and a report sent to the web team, if you continue to see this problemplease contact us at email address.

The error seems to be the browser_string field in the database is not able to contain the number of characters being sent to it, you either need to expand it ir change it to a memo field.

Nice feel but one note: by setting a width in numbers instead of percentage, browsers with windows small than your fixed width will miss some content, try using percentages in specifying width

Cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap. Who is ever looking for cheap? Is the site's intention to appear cheap, as well, to go with the slogans and pitch lines?

When it comes to chocolate, cheap is never a criterion. Affordable, maybe, but cheap, never. Abandon the idea of marketing anything cheap, and abandon any attempt to hoodwink web savvy customers of today. If colors can cost you sales, then colors can make them.

I don't know, what are the traffic stats on the term. The old adage of not saying 'cheap' because it makes your products look bad gets turned on its head on the internet because the question becomes, do people search more for 'cheap birthday gifts' on google, or 'affordable birthday gifts' or 'discount birthday gifts'

So, while marketers typically avoid the word, shoppers do use it in both senses: cheap as in (cheaply made) and cheap as in 'good deal'

Yes the 'cheap' stuff is just there because cheap birthday gifts (for example) has a higher search volume than inexpensive, good value, etc. I'm not keen on it as you can imagine, but more keen on trying to get visitors on the site naturally and it seemed a pretty good place to start trying to do that.

'The times, they are a changing!' Yes indeed, as is the language. Good point, cw1865.

The language today has gone from novel, as in 'tome', to novel, as in 'impromptu and intuitive'. The new colloquialism is TEXT.

Okay, I'll look at 'cheap' in a different light, henceforth, but reserve my right to be a cheap b*****d with little praise to offer this site, which could use some adjustment, imho.

Cocoon,

Validate your code and make sure, in particular, that all images have size attributes to prevent that annoying page-shake as each page loads.

Regards,

David

Cocoon-

I think AMXFAN hit all the points I noticed (and many that I didn't). I also don't like the color scheme much. General layout and navigation seem fine.

That is so funny,… refreshing to see something original!

The colors do tend to clash with the products, but wait, isn’t chocolate a neutral color and being such go with anything? Has my mind been brain washed by the branding of major candy mfgs?

On the one hand chocolate should taste rich so rich colors would seem to convey that but on the other hand not all of the Sugarpoke products are chocolate. Some are green and some of them red. Hmm, they match the package label. Since I am not a professional marketer then I will not comment any further about the colors except to say that the green keywords across the top are difficult to read against the white background.

Oh, and those green keywords looked like they would be links, wait, two of them are, the Anniversary and Wedding Gifts are links so why not the others?

The ‘Competition’ link surprised me because I thought of product competitors not a customer contest. Silly me, or is it just language differences?

I too think the pages would be better centered.

Have you considered using CSS to style the pages? It makes life sooo much easier when doing changes and things like the footer would be consistent throughout the site. CSS can be a little frustrating at first but with the help of some of the members here you will enjoy the benefits of it in no time.

A minor concern from me - when I went to the site, there is no hint apart from the pound signs which country/area this site services/delivers to.
