A good start. I would apply some css to tighten up the headlines so there is more of interest to a wider audience as that is who you are catering to in your mission statement in "About us"
Smaller pictures are just as effective as large ones and leave more room for interesting headlines and teaser text.
Don't be afraid to move your Google ads up front similar to the archive pages. People actually like them although I can understand your hesitancy to place them on the homepage. I was too, until I put them there, then realized people were clicking on them and my stats went up as well.
A little more explanation over the calender at left on the homepage would be good as it is a useful feature.
Size up your logo tag line.. It's fun and ads some excitement but needs to be a little more obvious in its relation to the logo....
You might try working your product offerings into your top nav bar as the blinking teddy bear isn't so cute after a while and does detract from the users assimilation of the logo and header information. :)
I like the formatting of the text. Provides a sense of class although, like I mentioned before, css "line-height" should be adjusted down to fit more interesting content on the front page. For example, if a user comes who is not interested in your first article, they will probably not stick around long as most users are looking for specific items. More article/calendar headings may just keep more users on your site for longer. Something to try and then watch the stats. You site has a third-blog, third news site, and third ecommerce feel to it. Thats a tough nut to crack if you are trying to be successful in all three areas.
Its a good start and I like the style. With more time and thought, it will probably do well. Just continue tweaking your meta tags and strive to improve the usability and stickability and you can't miss.
