Default Review: DisciplesofTech.com

I was wondering if you guys could have a look at my site. I am working on developing a site very much like BeerChurch.com only related to technology. we want to use the site as a way of helping out the community thru various community programs (EVENTUALLY that is probably a ways down the road)

Anyway one of the things about the site was the thought that we would allow anyone who signs up to be an author and make posts that will be mildly moderated to prevent just spammy articles.

I was wondering what everyone thought of this concept and also what people thought about the overall design and layout.

The site is located here Disciples of Tech

Any feedback is really appreciated.

Slow to load for me.

Looks similar to many other blogs. Not worse nor better.

The load time was a little slow for me as well.

Viewed with FireFox 3 or Safari @ 1024x768 you have a issue with your background image. as it hangs off the top right side above Subscribe via RSS. You also have the same issue at the bottom.

when I clicked your link it took me to http://www.disciplesoftech.com/#http://www.disciplesoftech.com/ is this correct? I would have expected just http://www.disciplesoftech.com/

I would change the Permalink Structure from default to help with SEO.

Hi Steven,

Have to agree with Dave, just another blog.

Saying that, it looks OK, although venting frustrations will put you into the category of another whinger.

Nice Chick!

You will have to moderate and have different content to go forward. Google bashing is an old and over used topic.

The site loaded ok for me FF3 and the site address worked OK

No problem.

The footer is still off by 1px to the right and the green is a shade or two lighter then the green in the content area.

I would still change the URL structure from .com/?p=266 to .com/name-of-article by adding /%postname%/ under settings then permalinks but it is up to you. I personally use /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ but just the post name would be good.

Best of luck.

I'm using IE 6.0, and was really impressed on how quickly your page loaded -- great improvement in this area. This is a big plus in getting new users to stick around long enough to check out your site. I wasn' t too crazy about the green on green color though, but the decor could be overcome by offering great content that keep folks coming back again and again. The underlining structure appears to be sound, no apparent script errors or page flaws. I wouldn't worry about the colors, it's the content that's important. I think you have done a great job in the layout and organization of your site.

If you publish articles that are useful and informative to readers, such as articles on emerging technology as well as the insights and perspectives from various authors, this will help raise your page ranking and increase your traffic. Don't give space to people that offer little in the way of substance or content, but are only trying to find a quick, easy, and cheap way to promote their own websites.

The "training area" compliments your site quite well. It offers resources and tools for faithful techies who want to improve their tech skills, and for newbies who are trying to break into the technology field. More content like this will drive more legitimate traffic to your site, and these same people may be inclined to write articles, giving their expert knowledge and advice, viewpoints, or pitfalls to avoid.

Finally, I clicked on your "Ordination" menu and I'm thinking this is a new fresh idea. I think people will be very curious about an online application that will allow anyone to become ordained and perform weddings. This will show off your tech skills and possibly drive more viral traffic to your site.

I think you're on the right track, just put the good, important stuff up front.

Being a ordained minister myself, I'm looking forward to see what all it includes.

Anyways
I just seen on page 3 the rating stars are over the images.

Thank you all for the great comments.

Yes I just added the stars yesterday and am tweaking the css to acount for the overlay.

I should have the ordination up soon, and am actually in the process of gathering people to write up basic courses. Those may take a little while to get up.

I think once it is done it will be a unique idea.

As for the Google bashing, ff that is what is implied it is not. I am bashing RipOffReport.com as it is completely an extortion scheme. Please don't take my word for it though. Just do a search on it. You'll find plenty of info out there.

Don't get me wrong I think the consumer should have a voice, however in this case the site is not used so much for giving the consumer a voice as it is a way to extort money from businesses. You really should check it out and get informed. This is very unethical site with no checks and balances in place. There was even an implication made by a former employee(?) of the site that they were encouraged to enter fabricated reports. I will see if I can find the link to that interview.
