Hi,
New to this site and a bit new to SEO - OK outdated!, but starting to get back into it. All the sites I build are small (5-20 pages as most don't have that much content, hell we are in Kefalonia Greece and not much happens here!). However, would appreciate a review of Skippered chartered sailing holidays around the Greek island of Kefalonia Yes I know that the pictures aren't there (picture page) as I am still waiting for these from the site owner. Anyhow, your citiques welcome. Thanks |

Ok. here goes.
Some of the crticisms that you made to Dave yesterday apply here. This is a high end market you are pitching at so you need to be at least as professional as the best out there. What makes your offering so special - USP and all that. A lot of work needed on SEO. Think about what folks are going to be searching for. Yacht Charter Greek Islands/Greece/Med have to figure large in any page titles, descriptions etc. These all need to match up too. None too sure about the right hand menu - very basic. As for content, the page about Corazon needs more images - interior, accommodation, cabins etc. I appreciate that you haven't got these yet - but gallery probably not enough. Remember that not everyone who is looking to charter will know what a Beneteau 50 is far less looks like - not all of us are sailors. Go look at dreamsailing.com - not a great site but it is something to use as reference. I have had a quick look at competition and their sites are not great but if you are to break into this market, you need to stand out from the crowd. Prices? I didn't see any and I would want to have at least a guide. I mean are we talking £10,000 per week or £5,000? The logo's colour is too close to that of background - doesn't really stand out. At least the html validates! Much to do yet but good luck - it is a busy market especially when www.syconcerto.com is in your neck of the woods.

To add to Iany's comments, you have a good opportunity to effectively SEO this site for some targeted keyword terms. I would recommend some targeted Home page efforts for the specific destination, such as yachting in kefalonia, kefalonia charter yachting, etc (it will be an uphill struggle to gain SERP for Greece). You can experiment on the other pages but the keywords you have now will be largely ineffective. Try some logical search terms (kefalonia charter tours, kefalonia day charter, Yachting on the Corazon, etc, etc). I recommend you stay with a general theme (strategy) within your pages rather than scatter gun keywording.
Then these need to be taken into the meta-tags and the content. Highlighting the keywords in the content may need to be rationalized with the owner of the site but it is probably worth changing some of the content, such as your H1 titles. Use photos in your pages and take full advantage of the alt and title tags as part of your keyword efforts. This is not a huge undertaking but this site has opportunity to enjoy some favorable SERP even with some simple efforts. Naturally there are many more avenues to pursue but that will depend on the importance to the owner of taking the usage of his yacht well past 10 weeks per year. On another note you have not generated your site map. This is a very worthwhile effort, make sure you submit the site map to search engines that allow this when you register with them at launch. Launch, an appropriate term in this case don't you think? Also, how about considering center monitor for viewing this site. We have polled many, many people on this issue and the large majority feel that a page centered site appears more professional. You can try this... Add to css style file #wraper {margin:0px auto;padding:0px;} Then add to the content body <div id="wrapper" align="center"> content </div> Good luck with the site. Thanks for all this guys.
I do agree with everything said, this site is just starting out it's life and some of the off-site work we have don requires some pages to be put up very quickly. Over the next few days (on ongoing) we will be developing the site, photos etc. But at least nobody says they actually don't like the site! |

Something to consider for the future. Although it may fly in the face of perceived wisdom, over the last few months we have found that the best way forward is to have a high quality home page based on the new design, whilst the rest of the site is being finalised. You make sure, of course, that it has contact details so folks can enquire. In this way you are much more likely to give potential customers a good feeling about the business. The key is that it is not really a holding page, but a home page with look and feel of what is to come.
In addition, it usually means that Mr Google has indexed the site and when new pages arrive it is so much easier to have them working for you in short order. Good luck.

Ian, thanks for that. I am working on it now for a number of small sites. The biggest problem with sites generated here (for businesses here) is they are usually small companies or 1 man bands and they do not want to consider much content or the work involved. They believe that once they have a web site - however good or bad - that's it they can leave it alone and do nothing - ever! Also typically the only look at the initial cost, start telling them over EU200 and they run a mile well actually over here it's KM. Most have never heard of a little thing called return on investment. You'll never get rich as a web designer here. My speciality is accessibility if I can ever get time to work on my site! we're too busy making signs and designing menus (as I said You'll never get rich as a web designer here so we had to start a print and sign making business) and I try to work more on that rather than on the design side of things. They prefer simple and non Flash - hell we've only just got ADSL in the village but where I live we are lucky to get 18KB.
Such is life, but at least the sun shines and it's warm about 35 here today. Last edited by parot; 08-29-2008 at 06:21 AM. |

I really like your site and sympathize with you living in sunny Greece and your comments on what they think they are looking for. I live in Puerto Vallarta, Mx approx 10 months out of the year and
run into some of your same problems. If it is any help to you, I tell them.... think of it this way, (when we are planning the site) . Mr. and Mrs. Coldweather sitting in cold bicycle seat, USA are planning their Holiday to sunny Mexico. They want to be seduced with your product. Your front page should make them want to be on that Yacht, Right Now! IMO, I would make the picture of the boat bigger and more inviting on the front. Then, of course, many, many, pictures of the activities you can do while aboard and land. Perhaps a picture show.... Just a thought. Good luck, perhaps I will get to Greece, Next summer!
