Default 101 Best Web Sites

My business partner and I have set ourselves the task of building a web app in 48 hours. We started a couple of hours ago at 10am and have managed to get the main site templates sorted out:

» 101 Best Web Sites

It's going to be a new type of web showcase site - full submission, registration, login, ratings etc. sort of a cross between Reddit and CSS Mania.

Please let me know what you think of the design and layout.

You can follow the blog at:

101 Best Web Sites

and see how we get on over the weekend!

Thanks

I'm worried to be honest

Our biggest issue in building this new site has been time! When ever we try to dedicate any, we end up getting distracted with work for our clients and never quite get stuck in and the idea got shelved."
If you did not have the time to make the site will you have the time to keep it going?
It takes the same amount of time if not more to keep it going as it did to create it.

Lastly, for the most part this is unfinished.
Every link goes nowhere. Maybe you ran out of time?

Not sure you read the information on the site - the 48 hours we're building it in hasn't finished yet... So far we're only 7 hours in!

At the moment the site submission form is being built, in another couple of hours you will be able to submit sites to the site to appear on the homepage. Then we need to sort out the ratings system and the profile pages...

Still a lot more to do but it's surprisingly fun!

My point was why post it for a review when it is not done...

And I have to ask. Is speed important or is quality? I do not believe they go hand and hand.

Ah, perhaps I wasn't entirely clear on the point of the exercise - we wanted to build this website for a while but haven't had the time away from clients to do it.

So, as a purely technical / fun idea we thought we'd see if we could build the site in 48 hours (well, 24 really: 10am - 10pm Saturday and Sunday). There are only two of us doing all the work - a back end developer (PHP, Javascript, MySQL, Codeigniter) and front end developer (design, xHTML, CSS and blogging / forum posts).

The reason I posted it here was to get some feedback and maybe some encouragement / interest from other developers and designers, perhaps even some nice comments and hints / tips for the usability, design and other things on the site we might not have thought of.

Speed and quality can go hand in hand, for instance the site is accessible, written in high quality xHTML/CSS, well coded in PHP and even has a WordPress install with bespoke template based on the main site - most of which was completed today, in the last 8 hours (we had a basic design and template ready to go this morning).

Perhaps I should have been clearer about it all, but if you read the blog:

101 Best Web Sites

You can find out more and follow the progress, it's been a fun day and you should be able to start submitting your own sites soon!

Day 2

So, we're still working on it and it's going well - so far we've got the submission form working - with realtime screnshots of the sites appearing on the form...

Now we just need some people to start submitting their favourite websites

It's getting close and it's very exciting for us to see everything coming together so well.

The plans we have for the future include full social bookmarking type tools, applications to allow you to add your sites to community sites such as myspace, facebook, bebo etc. and linking profiles via friend groups.

Default Re: 101 Best Web Sites - the saga continues!

So, it's been a couple of weeks since my last message and there has been quite a lot of interest in the site (thanks for those people who visited and submitted their sites)...

We've been continuing to add to the site, the submission process is very quick and easy to use, once your site has been submitted you get a full SEO and xHTML report. You can vote for your favourite sites and the listings are constantly updating with new submissions and the latest real-time voting.

Despite the worries of previous commentators plenty of other people have found the site useful and are coming back to view the changes - we're getting over 100 visitors a day and it's rising all the time (not too bad for a 2 week old site).

Anyway, if you like the site please submit your own for rating! Cheers
