Default Please review new Health related site

Please review Healthy Living , I am particularly concerned about the snippets of content with Read More... in sidebars been taken as duplicate content.

Any comment welcome, thank you in advance.

Neat website. However, my personal views go with small fonts. The About me and Contact link can be placed at the end of the content with added link to Home and site maps. Images are great and so is content...maybe you can add a Blog to the site. Even sign up Google ads - not only to generate revenue but also add to traffic.

I am not sure about marketing but you can always join Twitter and other social networks like facebook to promote your site yourself.

Btw, you might be interested to visit my Health blog at AustinTalks Persona Page | Statesman.com

All the best wishes, Cheers!

Spend some time learning about typography and then adjust your style sheets.

Light text, dark background = bad. Consider that some users might want to print pages. Light background, dark text = GOOD! It need not be completely white, almost white would provide enough contrast. You could still use a very light tan, grey or very pale blue. Each would be fine.

Give users what they expect to see. It's an informational site with plenty of content. Make it easy to read.

T h e k e r n i n g m a k e s r e a d i n g t e x t d i f f i c u l t . I f i n d i t f r u s t r a t i n g . E s p e c i a l l y i f t h e r e ' s a l o t o f t e x t o n t h e p a g e . D o y o u s e e t h e p o i n t I ' m t r y i n g t o m a k e ?

Follow Dave's advice regarding typography.

Bright blue background in the javascript menu doesn't compliment the page well. Change your page background to a lighter colour, change your menu background to a darker shade of blue and you're all set. Easy to read and easy on the eyes.

Missing meta keywords tag. Use 4 - 8 targeted keywords or keyphrases you want to rank for in Yahoo! and some other SE's.

Your meta description seems a little spammy.

Quote:
"This website is all about how we can be enacting healthy living. Have you ever truly pondered over the term ‘healthy living’? Really what is it? Is it about following the latest health trends? One month it is meats are OUT or let’s take up Pilates. There is much more to healthy living."
You've got between 150-160 characters to use a few targeted keywords and phrases and you've wasted it by over optimizing on one short phrase. Write a natural sounding paragraph comprised of a few of your targeted phrases.

This might be better:

Thank's guys.

Fixed text, think it reads easier now and menu background. Now to do battle with the client who loves the color of the background as it is and come up with some good <meta> description's .

I was looking at your website earlier today, and I couldn't figure out why I had trouble reading the text. I'm glad Dubbya stopped by to explain it.

You have an error on every page I looked at. It's your <noscript>.

Andrew

I had mixed feelings about the site.
  1. First it is a gorgeous eye candy layout and choice of colours. You clearly have talent. It looks like a magazine - and human reviewers at Google would love it.
  2. It is hard to read - it may be typography as others have said. For me it's not even the non white background but it is the awful layout. The general rule on the Net is that paragraphs should be no more than 3 or 4 sentences long.

Sometimes even one sentence is great as a paragraph!

You want to give people content but unless it is easy to read, not just eye candy, but easy to read, then people will give up and "click", the sound we don't want to hear. The surfer has not turned into a reader.
  3. I find the site too broad. You have a multitude of subjects there - astrology needs a site to itself so does numerology so does diet....You lose focus like this. You cannot be all things to all readers. You end up being nothing to no one. Focus on one subject. That will attract readers and a good themed site is good for optimisation too.
  4. If you want to build a readership, then you might consider putting an opt-in box on the page - in fact on every page
  5. Think about putting a blog on the domain too. WordPress would give you lots of freedom to use your creative side.
  6. And it allow you to easily add content to the site and automatically ping the search engines too. I just noticed the section on training at Plaskett college. That is a good training and way too much knowledge to put into a few pages on a standard website. But you could blog about your practice and the blog would help themeing because it has categories built in.
Good Luck

Alex

While ultimately, the client has the final say, tell them that it's more important to improve site usability and grow their customer base than to just say "hey it's my site and I like it as it is".

The average user will not struggle to find the information they need. If they can't read it, or don't like it, they'll leave and go to another site that they CAN read. That's the world we work in.

If the client is reasonable, offer to test the changes and provide them with results. If their focus is on growing their business, they'll agree.

Worst case scenario, you don't see any improvements and you have to change things back. No harm done.

Your header image has a grammatical error.
Should read "Simpson's". You're missing the apostrophe. Sorry, but I noticed that right away..
Also, agree that the font is too big.

Once again, thanks’ to everybody for help and suggestions. I have made the font smaller and will work on breaking it up into paragraphs. I originally set the site up with a white background and have pointed out to the client that I have yet to find a healthy related site that is not on a white background.

Personally I have no problem with the font size as it is now, but I do have a lot of issues with the background/font color. Some colorblind people won't be able to read this at all.

You also have lotsa validation errors.

"I originally set the site up with a white background and have pointed out to the client that I have yet to find a healthy related site that is not on a white background."

Andrew - if it is a first site for her she may feel very emotionally tied to the design and not realise how important a white background is. Try showing her a few books and then a magazine with text on a coloured background. And if you point out that many readers will have poor eyesight and even as bj above points out will be colour blind, you will have done all you can.

All The Best
