Default does my site looks like '90?

Following a link I found a forum thread were one of the users says my main site looks '90 and not very professional:
Web Hosting Talk - The largest, most influential web hosting community on the Internet - View Single Post - Webhosts that accept E-gold as the payment option?

Now my site is extremely search engine optimized and it is all my work, when I started I decided to go for pure html and now I have hundreds of pages all using the same template which through the years have been modified and so they might be full of errors but do come up for the right keywords. Because it is so many pages I dont feel like remaking the site, also I'm afraid to lose my position in google.

Now with this said, I would like your honest opinions. Is the site '90? not professional? stupid? poor navigation? ugly?
Shall I go for another design?

My site: FFmpeg Hosting - Video Hosting

Thanks
Paul

I am not a pro, but after looking at your site for a few minutes I can see a few things I would change if I were you. First, I don't think it is a good Idea to mix fonts. You have some text with serif and some without. I think the blue is a little too dark. I think you should use more white space and not try to get so much stuff on the same page. Take a look at google's home page.

2003

It looks awful in Firefox 2 under Mac OS X. Awful means misaligned. Different font sizes. Too much bright blue.

Video specific hosting with a 250 gig cap??

I have a feeling the design isn't the only thing that will be considered vintage.

Not really, my direct competitors also dont offer so much traffic, because while in normal hosting, a host can offer unlimited space and traffic, knowing that only a customer in a thousand will take advantage and when he does they just write to him asking to upgrade to a bigger plan giving as excuse that his site is using too much resources, CPU or something, with video hosting, hosts have to be honest, because most customers end up really using the available space and traffic, and as you know space is not ever unlimited and traffic is expensive.

I've used a couple hosts that gave 1000-2000 gigs with their packages and used the bandwidth with never a problem. Your rationalization about these other hosts is not accurate, unsubstatiated and a copout to justify your lesser offerings. IMHO

mtheory I suppose you believe in hosts offering unlimited web space and bandwidth.

Please find me a company who sells servers with this features.

Visio...your site does appear to have an old fashioned look to it. My suggestion since you are not a designer would be to look into purchasing a Template from someone like Template Monster and modify it to work with your product. Never mind people who discourage like mtheory. I checked his site and his flash work is lacking and old as well. Keep up the good work and keeping pushing forward.

Re-work the fonts, in terms of being screen friendly color, type and sizing.

I don't mean to discourage. I only try to give a pragmatic point of view and a glimpse of reality when it looks like they are heading down a percarious path.

This doesn't directly answer your question about design and layout (others have said enough). There are a couple of content-related items, which I assume you could change reasonably quickly, that detract from your credibility.

You have two different copyright dates: 2001-2006 in the footer, 2007 in the bottom left-hand corner.

The dates of your "Announcements" (2005) and "Hosting Marketers News" (2007) are too old to have a prominent position on your home page.

Small things, but they may create perceptions about lack of attention to detail and general inactivity in your company.

I understand the importance of the announcement and the news item. As a suggestion, can you simply remove or hide the dates?

Hi visio,

My first impression is that your site does load quickly - that's good.

Then I cringe at the serif fonts. I like good serif fonts but on some sites it just does not work. Serifs are designed so that type can degrade gracefully so that's not the issue on screen - hence why verdana was designed, so I must admit a preference for screen-readable fonts.

The blue? Too primary. A very basic blue. Swap it for some other blue or use a simple graduated blue bg.

The borders on the tables look ugly in FF.

Other than that there isn't a lot wrong with the site, a little time spent on getting the font and graphics right would help drag it out of the twentieth century, so yeah, it does look a bit '90s

As for going Web 2.0... when are people going to get sick of reflected logos, glassy images etc? SOme of us already have, so maybe don't go too far down that road and just have some "little black dress" designer get to work on it - good design never goes out of fashion
