My very first reaction: Ugly. Just plain ugly.

Could not find any contact info.

Hi Dave

Will add contact form.

I'll be the first to admit I'm a developer, not a designer. Definitely function over form. I'm trying to squeeze a lot of info onto one page.

Any suggestions for making it 'pretty'?

Thanks

well, considering (from my experience) that 'uglt' pages tend to out perform 'pretty' ones as far as conversion rates when it comes to PPC landing pages, I'll probably stick with what I have.

MySpace pages are the ugliest on the web and it seems to work for their users...

Interesting philosophy. Stats please. And are you sure that it's because the pages are ugly that they perform better and not because the 'pretty' ones are over decorated to the point of interfering with usability? I would agree that 'simple' is usually better, but ugly is just plain... ugly.

Very true. MySpace pages ARE ugly, they are popular, but are they 'successful'? What do you mean by "works for their users?" If you mean you are 15 years old and all you want to do is connect with friends and insult your schoolmates, then yes, I suppose it works. But I don't think the users who created the ugly pages are making $$ from them (maybe they're making some contacts).

MySpace offers social networking and gives people the ability to customize their pages (good sense of style, not included) and that's what keeps people coming back to tweak their own pages, see who viewed them, and check out their friends'. Does your site offer something that will keep people coming back?

Don't forget, MySapce is for people who don't know how to make webpages.

Most of my 'designer' friends consider 'simple' to be synonymous with 'ugly', that was the context I used in interpreting davebarnes comment, which was totally unhelpful as any sort of constructive criticism. Since the title of the forum was 'review' I'd actually hoped to get more than a drive-by soda thrown in my face followed up by your Captain Obvious comment.

Example (based on my viewing of davebarnes portrait and supposing it to be him): Dave, your face is really fat. Why don't you try going on a diet? Or: amorphic8, your nose looks like a *****, why don't you get a nose job?

See? I identified the issues (fat face/***** nose) and offered potential solutions (diet/nose job). Dave identified the issue (it's ugly) but unfortunately failed to follow through with the other half of the deal. My follow up was a cordial attempt to draw out WHAT he thought was ugly so I could evaluate whether or not I wanted to do anything about it. Your response to that was equally unhelpful as Dave's initial reply.

In any case I'll take 'simple' over pretty any day, as proven out by all the CPA adn CPL I do through PPC.

Oh, and thanks reviewing my site and helping me make it better. NOT!

Webdango,

My face is fat because I am overweight.
I hate dieting to lose weight.
I do love eating and drinking wine though.

,dave

P.S. Now, about your website. Ugly was harsh. Too "plain Jane" would be more appropriate.

1. I would recommend that you not use Verdana as a font for headings as the capital I is ugly with its large serifs.

2. I would recommend a more subdued blue. In my opinion, #0000EE is just way too hot.

3. I also think you should have a real logo. Create a logo and then a color palette (4 colors) based upon the logo color(s). ColorSchemer | Create matching color schemes at the click of a button can help with creating a palette.

4. Try to be more subtle with your colors. Gradients can help. See DEFENSICS. Defend. Then Deploy. - Codenomicon for an example (which I did not design). Or Malman Law Firm - Denver and Fort Collins personal injury lawyers which my partner did design.

You said that you are a developer and not a designer and asked for suggestions to make your site pretty; I did offer a suggestion that you hire a designer and you replied with:

My second response was an attempt to illustrate why on MySpace ugly is acceptable; not actually a suggestion, but a helpful point if you were able to understand it. I asked you for some stats on ugly out performing pretty so perhaps I could learn something, but your response was of a more 'personal' nature and a tad defensive.

If you wanted 'ugly' than why ask how to make it pretty? Go with what you've got if you feel it works, and best of luck to you.

As for:

Perhaps this comment is in the wrong place; appropriate in 'submit your face pic for review' but I didn't submit my face pic for review (I can't speak for Dave Barnes), so your 'suggestion' is unsolicited and could be perceived as an attempt to insult.

Personally, I think there are benefits to having a *****-like nose, but again, this is not the right place to discuss that, so I will refrain.

Good luck with your ugly site.
