I can't work out if it so bad that it's actually good - but I don't think so.

What's the point of the splash page? The graphics are child-like, is that the result of 4 years' graphics studies?

The navigation is not intuitive - no wonder poeple are getting "lossed" (lost?). And oh, the green is nasty. Yes, I'd make some changes soon...

I don't think the link is broken, the page is just SLOOOW...

Also, from the little I went through the site, there is no text. Anywhere. The little bit of text to describe links - only visible when mousing over barely related graphics, and mousovers describing images in the portfolio, are in images, not html text. How will any search engine find or index this site with no content?

EDIT: I have seen this approach on a few different artists' web sites, where everything is reached by clicking on an obscure image. I think its a great idea if you hate your visitors.

Hi, managed to get it open. I agree with the lack of ease to the navigation. In regards to the design itself, i don't think overall it shows you off a a designer. For example if you go to your photography work my first impression was, the design of your site looks out of sync to your actual work. ie doesn't bring out the best in your photos.
Hmm, and not sure about the flourescent green at all. One final note, i totally agree with Wige's comment on text. You do need more html text and content. This not only gives the site more information to your users, but also a step towards SEO (content is king as most people say!). Hope that helps.

I'm going to blunt:

this site's brutal.

Like Paul B said, these graphics are child-like. No one in their right mind is going to hire you as a graphic designer based on this website.

It was all I could do to force myself passed it to see what else there was.

From a web development standpoint it's a bloody mess. Gobs of styles and javascript that could be put into a seperate sheet, you could even get rid of the javascript and substitute it with CSS which will do much of what you want.

Then there's the nested table upon nested table, loaded up with inline styles. But, at least it validates! Work on getting it to validate with a 'strict' doctype.

Take a look around at what other people are doing...not necessarily to fall in line with a particular style, but just at how they are being put togther.

CSS Mania is a good place to start.

Better sharpen up those crayons! ; )

I like it. Your art is an avant-garde type and not readily understood by all. As an artist you can hardly expect all to like your art. You are very talented in your art. My word.
As a web designer, well you forget that most people browsing the net are just ordinary people. They need to be taken by the hand. In plain, buttons with words saying, HOME, PHOTOS etc. I could navigate your site fine, but have little hope for ordinary users.
I am not saying you should change it. It depends what is the purpose of the web page. You need to decide how much you compromise your ideas to the general accessibility. For that you are solely responsible.
Finally I say keep your direction in art. You are good.

I agree that the graphics are not professional looking ...*and* I like some of your photography very much ... but I don't think it's presented in a way that enhances it.

I also don't understand the use of underlines where there are not links ... nor do I understand the use of Splash pages which are outdated partly because they have no spider food (keyword rich text) and partly because users are not fond of having to click again to find out what a site's about ... I would say Splash pages have a much higher bounce rate than pages with text and clear navigation.

Cheers, MJ

Stuart,

A couple of comments on your website. I will focus on navigation, since getting lost was an issue for people originally sending you comments.

The splash page doesn't do much for me. Maybe it isn't splashy enough - not particularly colorful - and doesn't offer much in the way of information or context. The most informative element is the copyright notice.

I don't dislike splash pages, per se, but this one doesn't really offer the visitor much. It comes across as a stop sign on the way to your website. In part this is because the only thing I can click is "Enter" - there is no way to jump to a specific section of the website.

Once I click "Enter" I land on ... the navigation menu. This page is really nothing more than a menu and offers no information or context (apart from the fact that the images illustrate you design skills). So this page, too, comes across as a stop sign on the way to your website.

This page needn't offer the conventional "welcome" text, but it should offer something. My personal view is that a page that is nothing more than a navigation menu comes across as a sure sign of the work of a non-professional.

I think you need to change this page - the concept, even - and put some informative text on the page (intermixed with clever graphics, if you like), and make the menu into a real navigation menu that then appears on every page of your website. Indicate which page people are on either with a title or through a change in the color of the icon for that page in the navigation menu. The menu will help people feel anchored, and the title or highlighted icon will tell people where they are.

Example: When I click on "photography", I get a page with a navigation menu of your photos. There is a menu there, so I can move around - within the photos. There should also be the site navigation menu I mentioned so that people can get to any other page easily (without having constantly to bring up the page that is nothing but a menu).

But in the photography section, there is no indication of which group of photographs I am looking at. Add something to the right of the name in the menu to tell me which section of the photos I'm in - the eye, an arrow, a camera lens...something. This also is why some people will feel lost in this section. They don't know which group of photos they are looking at, and they have to guess to click on the eye to go back to the site navigation menu page.

The college artwork section. You need to optimize the images there - almost all are over 100K and one is over 200K, much too large for quick loading. Don't use animated gifs to show the different images from a project. Set up another little menu so that people can select different images from the project.

Lose the text under "My College Artwork". It sounds amateurish, and is confusing - it really isn't clear why these are works in progress if you completed the the course over a year ago. Replace the text with the words under the artwork image, and use the space under the artwork to put in the little menu I mentioned in the previous paragraph.

From your design portfolio, it seems that you've done most of the things I mentioned in the Brunel Scaffolding website. Why not on your own website?

You don't have to do it in a conventional way. The creative challenge is achieving conventional goals in new, innovative and interesting ways.

Duane

Your site is invisible to search engines because all of your main text are actually images.

Navigation and content should be TEXT. I know you're a graphic designer, but the Web is not a sheet of paper, it is WAY more flexible, however, your design doesn't take advantage of it.

Whats with all the table cells and invisible gifs? is this 1995 all over again? Oh no!
I am talking abut the home page. A little CSS will hold that image where it needs to be and get rid of the image map navigation. Not good design, not good accessibility and not good for the search engines.

I would put a navigation menu on your forum page; once the user is there how are they supposed to get back?

I would also put your photo categories on each gallery page so that people can skip directly to 'weddings' from 'bands' if they want to. Right now, they have to go back to 'Photography'

I actually like your graphic design samples very much, but the site needs to be designed by someone who knows web design, with your input to guide the style, of course.

I would guess you could have pretty much the same design 'style' as you currently have without all the problems if you found the right person to help you.
But as it stands right now, 'no face' will get 'no SE rankings' and probably 'no visitors'

Good Luck.
