Default Please review my site

Hi

I have already posted my queries regarding SEO and traffic in the appropriate forum. I'm after some constructive feedback on my online gift and gadget shop, in regards to design, user friendliness etc and everything else applicable to reviewing a site.

It's been live only since July this year, and am wondering whether or not the site is actually good enough! In terms of design/theme/concept it's quite different to most online shops, so i'm thinking, will this in fact put people off buying?

site is MyRedPacket.co.uk Unique Gift and Gadget Shop, Cool Presents, Unique Gifts, Personalised Gifts and Gadgets for Birthdays, Anniversary and Christmas > Home

Look forward to hearing some professional advise!
Many thanks

I think your site looks pretty good. The only thing that stands out for a second look is the title tags (<title>my page</title). They look a little over optimized and maybe disorganized. Here is a little article that may help.

SEOmoz | Best Practices for Title Tags

Other than that you might just want to keep testing. For example if you move the search bar to the top right hand corner will you get more searches? On the home page you have a lot of options: search, gift wizard, my wishlist, newsletter, events, etc...might want to test removing some or changing the order and see if it helps/hurts sales.

That said I think this site is better than 98% of the ecommerce sites I see.

Good luck!

I like the design. Maybe the copyright link could be updated to use your name alone or main keyword.

The site looks a lot like most merchant sites. I don't see any particular problem at first glance. The home page took over 20sec to load, so maybe you can optimize some of your images to help speed things along.

It did generate over 80 HTML errors, tho... not the home page, but the Toys & Games for Children page is the one I was looking at. The home page was slightly better: 70 errors.

There is a ton more CSS inline than you need, and your product description <div/>s all have the same id="desc"; that is technically not allowed. Any ID should be used at most ONCE per page. If you need to treat multiple instances of content similarly, use a class instead: class="desc" is the appropriate use.

The descriptions were only one example; there are numerous places where elements use the same ID, so make sure to fix them all.

After even closer inspection of your source code, I would get a book on CSS and make sure you understand it. You could post any questions you have here, or check out boagworld.com they are in the UK and have an excellent podcast and forum, as well.

There are also a ton of comments inside one of your <ul/>s on the home page; excessive use of comments won't affect the design, but they do add extra bytes to the page weight, not to mention they cause buggy CSS behavior in IE6. I use comments heavily when I build, but if I have an excessive amount, I remove them from my production site before it goes live.

Over all I think it looks fine, I didn't go through the whole site, page by page, but I would definitely clean up the markup.
