I have setup a website 12 months ago and although I'm starting to get traffic to the site, i am not getting 1st page listings for my main keyword "Alicante".

Please advise if the site is not as good as my designers told me it would be or please supply any suggestions you may have.

Expand your home page title tag and write a sub-page focusing on "Alicante" without other keywords.

also i would just add to the user friendliness of the site and tone down the yellow just a tad... just a thought... i would also recommend to not have the references to alicante beneath the advertisement for free directories.

It's currently no 2 in Google for Alicante Spain, and about 14 for Alicante on it's own - what do you want?

The add a link page doesn't work. The property listing page doesn't work. Probably others.

Doesn't affect rankings, but visually, it could use some work. The header should be a better sharper image. It took a while before I figured the light spot was a boat and the grey streak were rocks. The blue in the sky is slightly different than the blue in the menu. I also agree that the menu could be less yellow.

More white space on the left margin would help. Bolder headlines too. More pictures would be great.

On the SEO side, have you continually been writing more articles? Keep adding them - even one or two a month. Look for additional keywords to target and bring in traffic for other terms. How about "beaches in spain" or "spanish beaches" or "costa blanca".

Continue to seek relevant links. It seems that Yahoo admits to several hundred links. You might need a little more time too. How long have the completitor sites been around?

While you are ranking at the top of page 2 for me in G (for Alicante), you rank as number 3 for "Alicante Spain" (without quotes).

Web Design and free games seem out of place in the menus.

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions, I am trying to create a useful site in the Alicante region, which is why I want to get top listings for Alicante. People seem to like my fiestas guide and although I have top 5 listing for Alicante, Spain I would like top for Alicante on it's own and it shouldn't be that difficult?

I have amended site as per some of your instructions:
-reduced yellow colour
-removed 2 unrelated main nav links
-expanded title tag slightly

There is already a page focusing on Alicante specifically. Still not sure why there isn't a top ten listing yet though as I seem to be doing the right things.

You are essentially a city portal, and I assume your goal is similar to mine, which is to make it a resource for your particular city by offering commercial information, such as restaurants, hotels, travel information, real estate, business directory.

I have found that in the process of getting my site ranked high for certain keywords (and probably many will disagree) you need traffic for each page that your keywords pertain to.

my site HBonline.com using the keywords: huntington beach, huntington beach pier, Huntington beach sufing, huntington beach photos, huntington beach restaurants, Huntington beach fishing, huntington beach surf cam, hb surf, hb surfcam, hb restaurants........you get the idea

my particular pages pertaining to those searches come up on the first page in Google or Yahoo in the #1-6 spot

I would keep tweaking your meta tags, do a search for "Alicante" and see who pops up and copy their meta tags and add to your exissting meta, don't switch just look at theirs and add what you feel your meta tags are lacking.

Then wait about a week and see if anything has changed.

My site is pretty much totally commercial, whatever information I have is from paid advertisers, no one gets in my site with out paying for placement, However they do this because I get tons of traffic. The more paying advertisers the more content I get and the more entrenched I become. It just takes time.

I would improve in the eye candy area though, your site does not convey the beauty of the area right off the bat.

You are trying to fight in a very competitive area with Hotels, holiday villas, car rentals companies (big and small ones). So consider that many companies have their own SEO department just for that.

I have written about 20 or more articles on the area of Alicante. Am i hurting my rankings by also submitting the same articles to all the article submission sites (duplicate content)

or should I only:

a) submit articles on my own site
b) submit articles only to article directories
