Default Resizing Pics doesnt look right on our new site

Hi All,

Will you have a look at www.body--jewelry.com and give us your thoughts. Some features are not working yet which we realise but the look and feel of the site I would appreciate your comments.

I also have a question about the pictures on our site.

The small pictures which you will see on our product pages such as http://www.body--jewelry.com/jcat.asp?POS=17 are resized from the bigger pictures on the site. The small pictures look out of focus which must be from resizing them right? Is it possible to constrain the pictures so they resize but stay in focus like they would if we reduced the size in photoshop???

You could try this script to resize images:

You're right, resizing images causes them to become blurred.

Your current method is based on the presumption that "preloading" the larger images will save page loading time and server bandwidth. You've loaded the larger images but constrained their sizes to create thumbnails in your page code. Essentially, you're relying on the browser software's ability (or inability) to downsize the image, so there's nothing you can do to keep them from pixelating or appearing out of focus.

While your current method makes managing product images much easier (you only have one image per product) there's a tradeoff in image quality as the browser renders the images as best it can.

While this sounds like a good idea, it only holds true if your users visit every one of your product pages. For example, if a user only visits one or two pages, they've had to wait while the page loads nine 20Kb "thumbnail" images so that when they click on one, the next page loads more quickly.

In fact, had the initial page loaded nine 10Kb thumbnail images, it would have loaded more quickly, however the final product page and larger 20Kb image would load more slowly. I'd assume that a user would be willing to wait for a larger image to load if they want more information on a particular product they've selected.

What most sites do is create thumbnail images which link to the page containing the larger image. This method requires that you manage two images per product but the individual thumbnail images do look better and this will reduce page load times on pages with lots of photos.

There's an easy way to prevent the pixelation or blurring while resizing images (for use on the web) in Photoshop. It's done using the unsharp mask filter.

Here's a quick and easy tutorial that'll help you out.

Enjoy.
