Only put Google ads on subpages. Whitespace is good, but you want all three columns to be the same height!!!!!!! You don't want unnecessary whitespace.

1. Somewhere up front I would mention that the currency of Ecuador is the USD. 90+% of your website visitors probably do not know this. It is a strong selling point for Ecuador.

2. Your site loads very slowly for me. So, you should look at a better [performance] hosting provider.

3. Ask yourself how you intend to make money with this site. Somehow I doubt that Google ad revenue will rank high in income. So, dump the Google ads. Don't send people away from your website.

4. You have lots of original good content. My only negative there is that font size is too small for me.

5. Change your <title> tag. Remove "Latin america". Put the feature/benefit first and the site name.

6. I don't care for the domain name. I would prefer one with Ecuador in it. For example, ECUADORTRAVELONLINE.COM

Are you making a commission from the hotels that you are advertising for? You might want to contact them and work out a deal.
It also would be a good idea to duplicate the site in Spanish. While this won't have any relevance for the Spanish lessons, it could work for people looking to travel to Ecuador. You could be missing a very large market. The US alone has a large Spanish speaking population.
