Default PNG or JPEG ?

I am a newbie here and wondered if anyone had helpful advice for our silver jewellerysite.
The main query i have is with images. From a SEO point of view which is best - PNG or JPEG ?

For photos use JPEG without a doubt, but as for other artwork, theres not much between GIF and PNG. See what has the lowest filesize and go with that.

My first site in 2000 had a PNG logo. I eventually changed to GIF because as time went on, I was unsure.

It should be OK to use PNGs now, but test in different browsers to check compatability. I noticed one of my newer competitors uses PNG artwork on his site

I am fairly certain that from a SEO point of view the SEs don't care what image types you are using...

Default SEO? Doesn't matter...

From an SEO standpoint, it doesn't really matter.

If you are worried about SEO, more text, less images, use images to pretty things up, keep the content in readable text.

there is a huge difference between gifs and pngs as dave's link pointed out (and how they perform)... i prefer png but IE 6 doesn't support them very well. gifs are mainly for non-photo graphics like the WPW logo in the upper left corner.
