Props on xhtml strict and css layout. overall the layout of text needa more room to breath - just add more padding around things like the titles, nav, and paragraphs. Some of those paragraphs run on forever, try breaking them up into smaller chunks after 4 or 5 lines.

Well, there are a few issues here. If increase the text size to largest in IE6, it breaks the site layout completely.
Also, with the page you are using Header tags to wrap almost all content in, and that is not a great idea. You also use a header tags out of order on the page as well. I would also try and pick up the server load time. From Maryland, USA it is very slow. I'm not sure why you used PHP to define the pages, as you are using the same base file to create all of your pages. With a site the size of yours, that isn't necessary. Visually, I think it needs a lot more, some quality photos or visuals to help the site feel more attractive.

Thank you for the replies so far,
krus2378: I agree with you on your point about the paragraphs going on for too long, I am on it! weslinda: The text size thing in IE6 is an issue, you are correct. I am not sure why IE6 is doing this and not Firefox? Any ideas anyone? I have also taken your advice and sorted out the header tags. They should all be in order now (and only used where appropriate) The server is based in the UK so that would explain some of the slow load time. I also agree that more images and visuals will help, this will be an ongoing process.

Technically, it's not an IE issue, it is the fact that you are using a set font size, through Pixels, instead of using either a percentage font, or em for your font sizing.
Using % or em will allow you to build a site where the fonts can change size for it's visitors, no matter who is visiting and which browser they are using. FF will overide the font pixel size issue because they understand it is poor design, and want to ensure the browser is as accessible as possible even if the web site is not. Also, by setting fixed sizes to the heights of your content areas will also cause issues as well. All of your heading tags use a fixed pixel width font size. That's one major piece that will help alleviate the font size issue.

Server location should not define a load time issue. There are plenty of sites in various countries and they load quickly. I would guess the slow load time is related to using PHP to bring information into the page including your content and your style sheets.

Now fix height issues. Because your areas are defined by height, then when changing the font size up, it breaks your site.

No...tables isn't the answer, learning how to do this right is. It can be done. For example, I have one site I'm in the middle of working on, I've only laid out the template so far and it is far from done, but www.rnsnetwork.org is the site and you can see a bit.
I can help you, but there is a lot to learn.

Indeed, moving from tables to full blown CSS is hard - but I also know I have to do it and more importantly, understand it.
I really do appreciate your (and everyone elses) help - I know that you must all have more important things to be doing.... I think it is easy to get stuck in a situation where using tables is the easy option out. Believe me, I am committed to the learning of CSS. Thankfully sites like this enable me to initiate feedback from more experienced developers like yourself and learn along the way...

Once you learn CSS, you'll be amazed at the amount of time it can save you and that is one of the biggest factors for using it.
Learning step by step is the way to do it. Read up and try and overthink CSS. I found that when I take a step back and look at the site before I do anything, it's a lot easier to implement proper CSS, instead of trying to make one thing work one way in one area. We're all here to help as one of my goals is to help people learn how to do things more effectively and get them to the level that others have brought me to.
