Default VotedTop Website Charts Powered by People

Would you critique my site please

Purists will label it a Digg clone and they’d be right.
But its not another News site its website charts where the Best websites are chosen by the public not an editor

Feel free to put your website on there, it will even give you the html code to link to your entry so you can encourage your visitors to vote for you.

VotedTop Website Charts Powered by People

Also don’t forget to vote for WebProWorld - Here only if you want to.

Instant Registration - we dont do the email verification thing. I find it annoying so I'm not putting it on my website.

It migh have been nice to have 3 or 5 criteria, like aesthetics, usability, information value, etc, ...then maybe a composite score.

Or you could have created a really innovative rating system.

Competition and imitation are not the same thing, the different way they're spelled is a tipoff. All the questionable flattery of imitation does is remind people of the original.

One reason people hate Microsoft and love Apple is not that one copies and the other doesn't. The iPod clickwheel wasn't designed by Apple. What people hate is Microsoft copies down and Apple copies up. Apple doesn't "ape" other designs because they dimly sense a hit. They unite dozens of great ideas under a unified design which serves as a connecting thread and creates something larger than a loose collection of parts.

In other words, Good Designers Copy, Great Designers Steal

Thanks for the comment Dcrux I appreciate you taking the time.

Regarding you comments on Competition and imitation which I don’t understand the difference very well but it is a concern to me.

Here is my take on that subject:

At some point in the past someone thought of writing a program to go off and collect all the websites, put them in a big list then allow people to search the list, and they called it a search engine. The website would be a simple input box. Now there are thousands of search engines with arguably the same web design.

I see competing as an aggressive term where one tries to beat or take something away from the other. If I created a News site then I would be competing with Digg and I would be uncomfortable with that.

But I’m not doing a news site I’m doing something fundamentally different. News is transient here today gone tomorrow and websites are not. The best websites need to stay the Best and at the top but also New or active/Hot websites need to get a chance too so we can sort in recent activity or recent tag cloud etc.

So yes I’m using ajax to increment a vote number and sorting on that number and yes my site looks like old Digg but some things you can’t get away from, if I designed a new car it would probably have 4 wheels because that’s a good number to have.

I believe there is a deficiency with search engines they favour the Big companies with the budget to pay to be listed top or they have a large advertising budget, Big network connections.

Most people here are fighting to get a foot hold with SEO etc for simple reason They can’t afford to pay to be listed at the top.

On my website you can’t pay to be listed at the top and it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a page rank of 15 or a multimillion dollar budget, if the people don’t think you’re the best you aint going to be VotedTop

Wow long answer I must be guilty ><

I think I made the title of this post look like a cheesy cheap advert so only one person has done a critique

can I say I'm not a cheesy cheap website and I keep comming every day to see if anyone has bothered to look and possibly give me some ideas.

cheers

How are you doing with the ideas you've already received?

I think that might be why you don't have more comments.

There are several dozen really good web evaluation sites. Cool Home Pages is in my bookmark list and so is a site called Wow Factor.

If you're looking at several dozen "Top of the Web sites," maybe you do something different. And another kind of comparison/evaluation site is called Pirated Sites. So they found out what the others were doing, and differentiated.

What "ideas" would you like, exactly? The logo and look is Web 2.0 compliant. AJAX - Check.

I think you've done a great job -- don't change a thing.

well only you have looked but I do appreciate that I'm going to ask again with a better title I hope thats not breaking any rules but then for me this doesn't seem to matter that much on this forum.

so I'm a more than little dissapointed with the response.

Default mistake?

I think I found a small mistake - The tabs don't change whan you click on them (ie "home" doesn't - the others are OK).
Anyway, thats trivial, and soon fixed.

I would like to see a little thumbnail or preview of the site so I dont have to click and get lost in the site - ie I can evaluate what I might be interested in more easily.

Neat site!
I found a few little things:

From this page: http://www.votedtop.com/about/en clicking on the Home link at the bottom doesn't ake you home... goes to a 404.

When I'm on the Home page, the Home tab is not white, rather the Websites Chart is.

I don't think that there is a difference between the Home page and the Website Charts page. If there is, I missed it.
