Brick and Mortar Hunting and Fishing Store's Website
We are getting close to completing the website for our "brick and mortar" hunting and fishing store. Some of the content is not filled in yet but the look and feel is close to what we wanted.
Second Amendment Sports
Please give us any feedback. I am very interested in usability issues, since I worked on the site, I cannot be a fair judge if it is easy to find ones way around.
Thank you!

Technically excellent - table-less, valid strict XHTML - top marks there!
Some other points:
IMO the home page graphics are far too big and waste valuable 'real estate' on your site. Why not make them the same height as other pages?
There is also a problem with the CSS roll-over effect in IE and even in FF the first time the home page loads. What happens is the images show the blank grey background on mouseover and the change of color effect is lost. You could separate the images and the categories and have only the categories change - or use a work-round like have that div inside another with the background an image of the whole image, to stop the grey showing.
The grey top menu is not the same in IE & FF! The text line is grey in IE.
As it seems visitors will have to drill down through 4 clicks to get to the product details (which I assume are not there yet), you might even consider drop-down menus allowing a jump from the home page to the product.
I don't want to sound negative about what is really an excellent site, but I wonder if ecommerce might have expanded this company's sales by selling nationally online. The site already looks like an online store - some visitors might be disappointed that it isn't...

Paul,
Thanks for the good feedback. I appreciate it. The rollovers on the "home" page has given me some trouble. I will test your solution if it will do the trick. The background image on the very top navigation menu does not work in IE. I actually forgot to take a look at that. Thanks.
The site will eventually sell product. The company is successful at retail sales and online sales is the next step. Management wanted to have a better local informational site first then have a go at e-commerce.
Again, I really appreciate your feedback.
Jeff

I think Paul B has said most of what needs to be said. In my view it is among the best 5 sites I have seen in this review forum.

Brick and Mortar Hunting and Fishing Store's Website
Hi Jeff,
Still see the grey boxes for the mouseovers and I cannot find any code that does. Is it in the PHP?
I like the site, any discount if I ever get back to Ca?
Check your code!!!!

The rollover effect if generated in the stylesheet - and the effect of a momentary loss of image is an IE quirk using this method.

Excellent! But......
Visually excellent!
Valid XHTML!
But CSS, RSS, ATOM are not at all valid.
Please check that.
Otherwise a well designed site.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I really appreciate the community spirit.
I will work on the css issues. I didn't test the rss and css in the past 10 days. I knew there was a problem with ATOM...on my to do list. It seems like the last 1% of the site takes the most time!
Thanks again everyone.
