Default directportrait.com - suggestions please

As webmasters what do you think of the design and concept of this site.

Also what would the site need to offer for you to use it.

www.directportrait.com/content/

Thanks in advance

Hi Kim

Well done for using layers, that certainly is a step in the right direction for any website. I am also glad you use textual links for your site instead of boring old 'Click here'. Copy text is also pretty good (as it is your prime product)

However, your cream coloured boxes (on the right-hand side) overlap your slightly darker background by about 20(ish) pixels. Also these boxes look a little pokey and for the little they report, a waste of space.

This brings me onto the next thing. If a site can be too yellow, Your site is it. If you want to emphasise the site a little better without going overboard, then how about a khaki or olive background with your cream boxes? Have a gander at http://www.draac.com/colorchart.html and you'll see what I mean.

At 800x600, you have horizontal scroll bars galore. 1024 x 768 may be getting more and more popular but a majority still use 800x600 (especially for what I assume to be your target market audience). Horizontal scroll bars just seems to burdening and will put a lot of visitors off.

Finally (and maybe I am just in picky mode now) Your navigation is very bland and blends in a bit too well with the rest of the site. Perk it up a bit so its easier for your prospective clientele to identify.

HTH

The colors were ok... I'm viewing with an LCD screen.
Design:
Over all.. a bland "feel" to the site.
You should have paragraph headings (in bold) or
another color.. so people can scan the page rather than
having to read every word - which people will NOT do.

Concept:
It seems you have put yourself in a predicament.
You want people to purchase content, but you can not
show /preview it.... sort of trying to get people
to buy something sight unseen... a tough sell indeed.

Default Hamburgers, anyone?

Change your width to 760 and you will be fine on most screens.

Your background color shows up on my LCD monitor as orange. Reminds me of fast food restaurants. You have to be really careful about the psychology of color.

Also keep in mind that a lot of people are color blind -- not only red/green, but some people can't see yellow at all.

Most "biggie" sites are heavy on royal blue, at least in the masthead area, but I don't know if this really works or if it is just the color that most people can see.

Avoid pale blues, though. They are nice for WPW here because they are very relaxing, but not good if you want to sell something.

I agree with the fact that you are trying to sell a pig in a poke. People have to see examples. At least I would. I sure wouldn't pay for something that I couldn't see and even test drive as it were.

Good luck.

I do not mind the colours and I am one of the colour blind. For a content site I would have expected you to find a little more content to fill up a couple more boxes. I am one of those that can (and does) ignore huge design errors . . Not even notice them If the page I am viewing sells me something. The page does not convince me that it would be worth the effort to sign up.

You realy do need a complelling argument front and centre to let webmasters know they need to look further. As a wordsmith you need to ply your trade on the front page, not where we cannot see it.
