Default A florist site - www.theflowerpot.com

Hi Everyone,

I've finally worked up some courage to have this site reviewed. It was launched a couple of months ago, and we're still fine tuning everyday (mostly with keywords). It's meant to be viewed using IE6, Firefox, and Netscape 8 (maybe 7, but haven't tested it there).

I am looking for all kinds of suggestions and comments. In particular, suggestions about SEO optimization would be much appreciated.

The Flower Pot of Montreal - www.theflowerpot.com

What do you like about it? What is confusing? Is it appealing? It is easy to read? Is it too busy or clean enough? And so on....

If it's not too much trouble, please include your browser/OS info when you reply.

Go wild!

Thanks

The Flower Pot Webmaster

------------------------------------------
Side Note: Advanced apologies for slight difference in Mozilla. The site is more or less perfect in IE 6. But Firefox 1+, and Netscape 8 has a different box model, so there is one instance where I can't support my column structure with two relative width columns (image in one column, and text next to it). Instead, the text comes below the image. You'll see it... I tried all kinds of floats in CSS, and played with the widths, I just don't know what's missing in my approach, and why only IE interprets it the way I'd like it to.

While the clean, elegant design is great, it seems odd to have the text start so low on the page. The flower photo is beautiful, but you should play around with the text/menu/flower arrangement so that the text appears, well, pretty much where the flower is now.

The left menu keeps changing when you click on the top menu, and that is confusing. Not sure what to suggest, though. It looks like you put a lot of time and thought into that part of the design, so see how it works.

Hope this is helpful.

Janet

I agree with Janet on the arrangement, there's too much white space to the right of the flower.

Move the flower over to the right and do what Janet suggests and move the text where the flower is now.

Then you get everything seen straight away. Otherwise it's a good, clean design with a lot of potential ;-)

Default I like the feel

It’s got a great clean cut feel to it very homey. I think if you add color to the navigation bar on your internal pages it may give it a colorful look to it. Have you also considered a search for your site? Other then that great looking site.

Default how to get rid of the white space...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone...

So the white space is where I need some CSS help.

See, there is no white space in IE 6 next to the flower (unless you tell me otherwise). In fact, 80-90% of the site is visible without scrolling if you're using IE6. Firefox is where things get complicated...and the text gets pushed low.

So its not intentional, and i havent figure out how to fix that without using tables. I have avoided tables so far, so I would like any suggestions on what to do with CSS

Thanks

The site is squeeky clean and appears to have been very well thought out. Though it seems easy enough to find products, I'd highly recommend that you consider adding a site search box.

Zoom Search from Wrensoft is cheap and easy to implement.
Zoom Search Engine - Add search to your website, intranet or CD/DVD

The checkout seems to work well and has a good flow to it. I can't see any issues that would overtly cause cart abandonment. Looks like you're good to go!

In Firefox 2.0.0.3:

On the home page, the link text under the categories on the right side of the page is WAY too small with a monitor resolution set at 1024x768. Additionally, the line spacing under the categories is a little closer than in IE. You've got lots of empty space on that side of the page, so it's a simple fix.

Likewise, the description lists use text that's much too small. (8 pixels is too small) You should never need to go smaller than 10 pixels. (11 pixels is quite easily read at 1024x76

Consider adjusting the padding/margins or a simple <br /> before the top lines of text so that it's not touching the bottom edges of graphics or to align it better with photos in the category pages.

IE7:
Text is too big and the line heights are pushing your content all over the place.

IE6:
Much better! Line heights and text sizes work fine at 1024x768.

Opera 9.01:
Looks good here too.

Safari 3.01:
Again, the line height issues in your content and list items abound. If you fix it in Firefox, it'll look great here too.

Netscape Navigator 9.0b1
Looks fine, perfect in fact.

It is a very nice site.

Only two minor points. Some of the pictures you use look too low res, they detract from the over all feel of the site. Also your Product Codes look a bit too scary, I think.
Product Code: PFLO-AZAa-KCP for example. It means something to you, but to the public it looks like something in an arcane computer language!

Hi nsobhan,

Here is a link to check your code The W3C Markup Validation Service
It will help identify errors which can cause a browser to not display properly. IE seems to be more forgiving towards errors than the other browsers.

There is an option to show an outline of your site using the heading tags. You seem to be missing these important tags which help with search engine optimization. Create the headings with your keywords in mind.

Nice work, I hope this helps!

I think the design is very pleasing. The addition of your blog really personalizes this. Good work!
