Well here it is, my first effort to go on line. in between the day job it has taken some time to get up and running. to me that's the hard bit - the easy bit is taking the feedback from those more experienced "feedback is the fuel for improvement" (apparently!). do i explain myself? can you navigate? too much (too little) detail? etc all comments appreciated, thanks for your time <Mod edit to comply with Site Review Rule #1 - Syren> |

Ian,
I must say for a first try, it is spot on. Very clean and easy to understand (even for this Yank). Three things I would suggest: 1) Move the home page navigation to the left side like you have on the rest of your pages. Humans are creatures of habit and like consistency. 2) The blue text does get a little hard to read over the light blue grid after a while. You might want to go black with the text color. 3) In your navigation link "What Do I Do?" and in the corresponding page, you talk in first person. But on the "Contact" page and the "Who is SD?" page, you refer to yourself in 3rd person. Let try to remain in the first person shall we?

Scott,

The rule of thumb (at least the way I remember it) is that if your top or side navigation leaves the screen when your viewer scrolls, you should include navigation at the bottom of the page. At the least, a “Back to Top” link that pushes the page back to the top.
The other thought is that when you use graphic elements (.gif/.jpeg), JavaScript or Flash for your navigation, it is always good to put text based links at the bottom of your page, not only for those with graphics turned off or those without the proper plug-ins, but for those with handicaps. Now you use text based links so you don't have to worry about most of this, but some of your pages are long enough to justify bottom navigation as well as your side bar. Personally, I add the bottom navigation to all the sites I create. Partly out of habit, but mostly because I try to make every site I do usable to all viewers. Hope that helps.

OK, i've sorted the navigation on the home page from right to left and i'll try to amend the font colour to black in the next day or so - dependent on New year celebrations i expect!!
the "3rd person" commentary i will need to give some thought to but it is a valid comment - consistency is something I try to apply to my sport and employment, so it should also apply here. the text navigators at foot of page i am glad to have have confirmation on. my gut feeling was it should be incorporated (just from viewing "major" sites) but without being intrusive. i'll find a style i like and then try to accomodate it. thanks again Scott, any other comments anyone? |
