Dear WPW,

I have three months before turning over web design to a colleague. Before time runs out I would love for knowledgeable persons to comment and help design the this site. It was the first I've ever created.

I am curious about why the home page gets a PR of 2 while all others rank 3. One page ranks a 4. Also, about 25% of current traffic comes from search engines. I'd like to see more traffic from search terms "iq" and "iq test".

Thanks,

Barry

Without really crawling through the site, a few quick thoughts:

Your index page has more code then others it appears with three GoogleAd scripts.

For that matter, the first thing in your page is GoogleAd javascript ...

Your content and keyword ratio is probably being thrown off by the excessive scripts and the "title" tags you have in all your text links - may be being regarding as "packing" in too many keyword attempts.

I think you're actually trying too hard to rank on "iq" and "iq test" and it's possibly backfiring on you ...

Just a few quick thoughts to get you started maybe.

Good luck and happy ranking!

Trying too hard
Indeed this appears the problem. 'IQ test' repesents 9.03% of keyword phrases on the home page. Go over 7% and you're going to get penalized.

Why no CSS or defined fonts? Makes the site look drab and unfinished. There is a navigation problem too. The left-hand menu of the home page disappears on other pages.

The logo is an odd one. It looks like a wooden version of the Greek island of Crete!?!

I am not a big fan of 'cash cow link farm' sites either...

The whole site looks great! I have a friend who is working on these types of sites and he will be in touch with you. :)

Thanks very much for your feedback. The Crete observation is priceless. :) The logo was created at a free logo design site.

I have put some effort into making the home page appear as if I’m not really trying. Is the home page now under 7% for target words? Is there a free tool to use to determine the percentage?

As far as the site being a cash cow, the site’s goals are to 1) educate the public about unprofessional sites that should not be selling IQ tests and 2) to connect with other professionals in a effort to raise standards. I am glad you mentioned that the site has the appearance as a for-profit site that I am trying to critique! Quite simply, I’d like to earn the hosting and domain registration fees. If the layout gives the wrong appearance of a for-profit site then I’ll remove the ads altogether.

Nicely constructed site but the non-graphical side of it makes it look over 10 years old! Get some CSS on the links/text, add some colour and some jazzy images (kill that logo!) It'll make the site what it should be! If possible try and reduce those ads a bit too.

If you're not sure how to do anything look for some tutorials on google or post a question sumwhere on this site!

Thanks for your constructive criticism. I think our target audience wants conent instead of flashy design, a trite rationalization to state that I really don't know how to write CSS or design jazzy graphics myself. ;) The boring, outdated graphics will be overhauled within a year after I turn over the programming to a friend with more experience.

www.sitereportcard.com is a wonderful, free resource. "iq" and "test" neatly sit below 7% as a result.

I was just informed that a web directory will not include the site because it appears to be a "for-profit" site. If he could only see the minimal amount of revenue it has created.

As far as layout, the Google ads help structure the pages. They're in place instead of tabs. Perhaps tabs would be a better addition to avoid any conflict of interest.

Google solved the problem for us: They disabled our account. I did not click on any ads myself nor did the three others working on the site. How odd. The ads still appear.

What is below this,

Thomas, B. (2005, May 8). iqte.st Home Page. Retrieved June 9, 2005 from the World Wide Web: http://iqte.st

I just see somthing that looks like it wants to come out.

Put your site updated under you google search

Did you put an extra space in your menu area around some of the text links?

Thank you for catching that mistake. Please tell me if there are others, or additional ideas for enhancement.
