We have tried to create an easy to navigate shopping site, without fancy schmancy gizmos & gimmicks and with easy one page ordering (without clicking through endless subcategories), but we are concerned about the photo download times for slower systems, and perhaps being too bland in our presentations.
Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

It is as you say, simple but so much scrolling to try to find anything.

your website has all the info it needs, but the front page is very long and might benefit from being broken up into a couple of pages. this will make it load quicker, which is very important as you only have about three seconds to persuade a visitor to stay before they find another site. also although it means people will have to click to get to the other info it will be more "friendly" to navigate, its easy to get lost on a long page.
you might want to use a site like www.submitexpress.com to check your keyword meta tags, they seem a bit long to me. arobots fill in the head would also make spiders follow through the other pages when they visit your site:

The green along the side doesnt seem to go well with the red text, but this is only my opinion and i am far from being a designer. i recently done a review of a website seeling similar products that had a colour scheme that i thought worked very well:

On entering your site, it's not entirely clear what it's called, maybe a new logo might be in order.

Subcategories have their place and with the sheer amount of clothing you are selling it's something I think you really need to put in place.

The pages are massive and visitors will get bored very quickly if they have to scroll so much.

It could be a very interesting site with a bit of development so keep going ;)
