Default earthstationroswell.com - Earthstation Roswell

I am working on a new site, and there is much to do as yet, but I thought I would ask for suggestions at this early stage. I am still waiting for the bulk of the content, so there is not much there, but I think it will be interesting. Any suggestions are welcomed. Remember, this site is just a nubie, and until I get all the data from the client, my hands are a bit tied. Thanks for the help!

It's very hard to review the site without content (though I understand your situation). To be honest, I'm not even really sure what the site "wants" to be with the limited content you've provided. Is it about UFO's in the Roswell area? Is it for a B&B or hotel catering to UFO watchers? Not sure.

Overall, I think you should consider taking the UFO theme in a slightly cleaner, more understated direction. The site blends in with a lot of UFO sites because it uses a lot of the same devices (black starry background, animated saucer gifs, etc.), and because so many of those sites offer redundant or just plain poor content, I'm not sure you want to share their style.

Black sites and readability almost never go together (or at best it's very hard to pull off). If this site is going to have a lot of content, then you may want to pick another color set.

That's all I've got. I hope it helps.

John

My first impression is that the site looks really "dated". I'd recommend a more high-tech look. Maybe a design that is somewhat metallic and more "space-age" looking? (Refer to whipnet's design to see what I mean, it's clean and futuristic.)

I'd work on that home page graphic of Roswell - the resolution is really poor. But then, I assume that might change when you receive content and images?

All the little icons for links are placed willy-nilly on each of the pages so the site isn't very well organized throughout. Also, the spaceship link icons need to be converted to transparent GIFs; right now they're on black, which shows up on the starry background.

The lime green serif font on that starry background is a little unsettling. I'd recommend creating a text box with a color background and use only the starry background around the top half of the page.

Hope this helps as you move forward. Good luck!

I sure can understand waiting for content but think of this as your opportunity to do your research. You should know enough about the client's business to get the foundation in place now.

What does a visitor need to know to book a room?

Where is it? How many rooms? What other facilities are offered? How much? How do I book rooms? What do the rooms look like? When is checkin/checkout times.

Build the site with the right questions and fill in the blanks as the client gives you the details. Better yet, get some of his existing brochures and start filling them in yourself.

I agree that the look is dated. Take some time to look at other hotel/motel sites and find the elements you like. What would do the trick for you if you were looking for a place to stay?

Create somekind of header/banner with the UFOish look but create the rest of the site to be easy to navigate, easy to read and especially easy to book a room.

Good luck

JM
