Default MikeysTown.com - Compare New Design To Old Design

Hello WebProWorld Members:

Recently our staff was hosting a "Third Anniversary Bash" for our third year on the internet. As part of the bash, our staff was redesigning everything on our site. Being the webmaster and designer of the homepage, I was wondering what suggestions you had.

Below are the pages to the original homepage design and the current one:

Original Design - http://mnaper.tripod.com/HomePageORIGINAL.html

Current Design - http://mnaper.tripod.com/HomePage.html

Thanks for any suggestion! I really appreciate it when others take the time to look at my work. I just turned 14, and am very dedicated to my website and web design. I know I may not do the best design that some pro could do, but I try my best and would appreciate any pro help I can get! Thanks!

Sincerely,
Mike

P.S. Oh, and one more thing: The website is directed toward children of ages 8-13, so try and bring out your inner child (Think about what children like: animation, flashing dots, cool effects), or even better, ask one of your children to check it out and see what they think. Thanks again!

Edit: I'll be removing the original homepage link to conserve space around the end of May, so if the link becomes broken, that's why.

Hello,

Both versions are very similar
Looking at it from a kids point of view - i feel that you want it to be bright and cheery.

But it is a little hard to read some of the text because the colors make it a little difficult to read after a while. Especially the bright green at the top.
Sites like these are also colorful:
http://www.kidscom.com/
But are easy to navigate and read.

If I was a kid I would not want to read all that "stuff" at the top just to get to the "fun" links. I suggest bringing your links to the top or the left of your page and keep them consistant on all your pages.

I would delete all the Mikey's Town in front of your first set of links and just have a section that says:
At Mikeys Town:
...and then your links.

Your featured section links:
Try using pictures that kids know to associate with your links. Kids mostly use pictures to find what they are looking for.

I would also break up some of the info on your home page to other pages.
Have a seperate 'Poll' page. 'Fun Facts' etc,
right now there is alot to go through on that page.

Keep on experimenting and learning all you can and it will be great!

Post back if you make any changes :)

Hello!

Thanks so much for reviewing my website! I've only just published the newer version yesterday (May 1), so I'm sure I'll notice things once I get used to looking at it.

I know it may seem like a lot at the top now, but I believe it might be the long paragraph about the 3rd Anniversary Bash. Once a new update comes, I'm sure it will look like a lot less.

I have already received a suggestion to place pictures by the main sections, so I've been trying to find good pictures, unfortunately I have only found Spongebob, but I'm still lookin'! I'm trying to find size icons such as the ones you find next to websites in the Favorites Menu.

I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with the Interactive section. I realize it's long, but I'm still tinkering with it. I might make it a seperate page or use buttons to navigate it. What do you think?

About keeping the contents on each page, I don't think I'll put the entire contents there, but I'll be sure to have the main sections. I'm still thinking about it though.

I think that's about it. If you have any more suggestions about the HomePage or my above response, please reply! I appreciate your help!

Sincerely,
Mike

Hi Mike

I liked the site. The background music was great and made me laugh which put me in a great mood and made me pay more attention.

I do have a comment to make about your main site though and that is you are using a javascript banner. A lot of computers will not have the necessary software installed to run this. A consequence of this is that the window will collapse to the taskbar should they click to cancel the javascript download. Should they pick to install the javascript from the prompt they will be faced with a nightmare route to locate it. Bit nasty if you ask me and unecessary.

Getting back to the page appraisal i normally frown on music but it sure enhanced the site greatly.

Grr - double posted. Used the back button instead of a link. Oops. Can't see how to delete this either?

Hello!

Thanks so much for reviewing the page! I greatly appreciate it! I might embarrass myself here, but where is the javascript banner? Do you mean an ad banner or something else? Do you mean the "Live Help" button?

Sincerely,
Mike

P.S. Thanks for the compliment on the music, LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed it, since most children would! It does put you in a happy mood, doesn't it?

Hello!

Does anyone know a website where I can find cartoon icons approximately the size of a favorites icon?
I would like to use it next to the section's title (Pokémon, Crash Bandicoot, Dragonball Z, Spongebob Squarepants) on the homepage so kids can automatically recognize the section.

Sincerely,
Mike

Mike how about these:

http://www.kidsdomain.com/clip/

http://pokenium.free.fr/images/perso/

Try doing a search on google in the images category.

If you can't find something you are allowed to use, how about going out and buying a figurine or toy and take a really really good picture of it.
You can use that or play around and edit it in photoshop or a different image editing program.
