Hi Monty!

Good effort - my first impressions:-

I like the chequered blue and white squares on the forty five degree angle, reminds me of chef's stuff straight away.

Maybe you can try it simplified, without the coloured 'flame' in the top half? Or combine the simplified version with a 'Copperplate' type font and see if it works that way?

Just a couple of ideas Eric...think you have some good elements which will work well with a little messing around. I'm on a bit of a 'simplify absolutely everything' kind of a run at the moment, so I am probably biased toward pruning it back a bit.

I would personally lose most of the colours, maybe keeping it blue and white, change the font to some sort of Copperplate, then lose the sun, the flames. Then I'd maybe change the colour of the ovalised 'platter' to the blue, and carry the shape around so it disappeared behind the chequered pattern. Or to suggest the heat in the hot stuff maybe use a different font and colour it red/orange? Not quite sure. Would be good if you could get some sort of 'flambe-effect font' I suppose!

Hope that helps and good luck!
Darren.

I agree with darren13 on most of his comments.

My initial perception, because of the colors and the large flames, is "fast" and "family", not "gourmet". Your logo is loud and fun feeling, where my perception of gourmet is subtle and understated, but still high quality.

I too like the idea you're wanting to go with -- scaling back just a bit does seem to be a good idea. Less means more, kind of thing, especially with food logos. But not too much less.

Anyway, one question I would have is will the logo also appear on letterhead. If so, will the letterhead be color? The reason I wonder that is just in case the logo will still be readable on any documents that need to be photocopied. I know that isn't always something that can be helped in all situations, but something to keep in mind nonetheless.

My first impression was "ice cream cone" because of the shape. The longer I looked at it, I started to understand your identity a little more with the tablecloth and flames.

There might be just a bit too much going on...?

Default New Look For Same Client

Hello everyone..... I really appreciate your input. The client was in agreement with the "too busy" comment. After stepping back for a few days then coming back to it, I can see what you mean.

I have tried going in another direction completely. He does want to represent a more "elegant" look for his new items. Let me know what you think....

Thanks.........eric

The 2nd one I would think you would want a small pic of the stuff he is selling.

specializes in hot sauces

Some place in the logo. This 2nd one looks plain.

First impression on #2 - special paints? painter? artist? It does not convey FOOD to me, it's pretty "blah".

The element that I immediately noticed, and found to be a negative, was the offset "Gourmet Foods" - that is, it's left aligned to "Monty's". Everthing else about the logo displays a center-alignment. Were it me, I'd first try redoing "Gourmet Foods" with a cursive-style, slashing typeface, slightly larger than the current size, but still smaller than Monty's, and of course, center-aligned under Monty's. Or, redo Monty's with a cursive font and center-align Gourmet Foods with a sans-serif font.

Bill M.

P.S. I didn't see the second link while I typed out the above until after I finished, and voila, you did something along the lines of what I mentioned with your logo5send.jpg. I personally like some of it, but I liked the riot of color of the first, and I'm not sure about the inconsistent cursive font of Monty's.

I agree with this, the drop shadow doesn't add anything to this... if anything it takes away from it.

Default To Do:

1. I would loose the drop shadow. Once you start to get more into printing it could sometimes gets you in trouble. You can tell you used a vector based program. Probably illustrator because the shadow effect is to easy to use, being in the styles section of you tool pallet. When making logos for customers try to stay away from the style effect in illustrator. It's tempting but it will only cause you problems down the road.

2. Colors - you need to figure out what impression you want to give with your choice of colors. If you want to give the impression of fast and quick, then use reds and yellows. These two colors trigger hunger and alert. If you think about it all fast food places use these colors; burger king, taco bell, McDonalds, etc. It's because they give the impression of quick cheap meal. By just using red you make the design more elegant. More like a resturant. Like T.G.I. Fridays, Sizzler, Red Lobster. Try not to combine with any blues.

3. Study other logo designers; ie, thelogofactory.com, thelogocompany.net, etc. To see how they put those types of logos together. By studing others you will learn.

Good Luck

Default Final Design

Well first of all I want to thank each of you for your input and advice. It is very much appreciated. After several revisions, designs and creative head scratching, we finally came together on a design that the client liked. It is very simple compared to the first one and is easily reproduced at any scale.

Here is the final logo that customer opted for:

Once again, thanks for all your input and advice.

Default Opt Was A Bad Word

I think I probably used the wrong word when I said opted...... this was what he wanted.... through the design process we came to this final look. We went from very colorful but busy logo to this simpler more recognizable one..... thanks.......eric
