For today's editor note, I want you try and think back to your childhood. Or if you have children reflect on how they've grown. It seems like when we are young there's always this phase of 'whatever you can do, I can do better'. It looks as though Microsoft and Google are going through this phase right now.

A couple of weeks ago Bing was unleashed upon the world, and made quite a splash. It instantly became more popular than Live Search ever was, and ruffled some feathers over at the house of Google.

Google now has fired back at Microsoft, basically saying -- you think you can do search better than us, well we can make an OS better than you. Priceless.

You heard correctly, Google has announced they are in the works for creating a Google Chrome OS. There have been few details released at this point. The OS will be open source and directed more towards netbooks. Along with being geared towards netbooks, it looks like the OS will focus primarily on being connected to the web. Not a surprise considering it is Google.

While the 'I can do it better than you' mentality is generally annoying with children, it's great for industry. Seeing these two colossal OS/Search titans clash is a treat. The only real winner is the users, who will reap the benefits of seeing the companies have to really put 100% into the products they create.

The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and ideas of the WebProWorld community.

Google Plans a PC Operating System

Google Plans a PC Operating System
My thin client when starting this thread is Opera 10 Beta.

"SAN FRANCISCO — In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google announced late Tuesday that it is developing an operating system for PCs that is tied to its Chrome Web browser.

The software, called the Google Chrome Operating System, is initially intended for use in the tiny, low-cost portable computers known as netbooks, which have been selling quickly even as demand for other PCs has plummeted. Google said it believed the software would also be able to power full-fledged PCs.

The move is likely to sharpen the already intense competition between Google and Microsoft, whose Windows operating system controls the basic functions of the vast majority of personal computers".

.................................................. ..................................

Google’s plans for the new operating system fit its Internet-centric vision of computing. Google believes that software delivered over the Web will play an increasingly central role, replacing software programs that run on the desktop. In that world, applications run directly inside an Internet browser, rather than atop an operating system, the standard software that controls most of the operations of a PC.

Title and Alt attributes on Images

Due to the advent of IE8 I have decided to add title attributes to most of my images so the subject is described on a mouseover. this used to happen in IE7 with the alt atribute, now its similar to Firefox and others in that alt attributes are not described on a mouseover...

As most of my traffic is from users using IE (although Firefox is coming up to almost 25% nowadays..) I decided to start on this horrendous job...I have several thousand images to "title" most of the time I am just repeating the alt attribute...

for example: [img src="home/dolphin.jpg" alt="Rebreather diver by Cedar Pride wreck" title="Rebreather diver by Cedar Pride wreck" width="250" height="188" /]

So far I have rewritten 20 or so pages...I was wondering whether I am wasting my time?

I was also worried about using the same as the alt.. but that is what is supposed tobe used by screen readers is it not or do they use title..??

What do other members think on this subject...I am assuming it will be Ok SEO wise..how about google image search???

Behavioral Advertising

I will admit... This is rather a new concept to me. As in... I never actually thought that such a practice really existed, but here is the latest news release. Google Public Policy Blog: Self-regulatory principles for behavioral advertising Is anybody well versed enough to truly understand what exactly behavioral advertising is and how it is used to "increase the sale"?

I am almost certain this is why the advertisements inside facebook are so accurate and demeaning at the same time. Doesn't this violate any of my rights as a human being? If it doesn't. No worries. I really don't think too many people would be bothered by it really. I am just asking because I don't really know.

And if it doesn't violate any of my rights as a human being. How does it effect a small businesses ability to do business? I mean does buying into the advertising practice give you greater control over who you target or does it just give bigger business better knowledge and regulation over small business practices?

I thought it was against most search engines guidelines to target users and change the content of your page based on how a user was referred to your website. Has this changed? Can I now cloak content and serve content to a user however I see fit?

User Authentication Services: Good or Bad?
Products such as OpenID, Facebook Connect, and Google Friend Connect are becoming quite popular today. They intrigue people because they provide user authentication and easy Web accessibility. Marketers and advertisers also find them very useful. While they do offer valuable services, there are some negative aspects involved as well.
