I've always found it funny how people view web browsers. You can tell quite a bit about a person by what web browser they use. Internet Explorer users are less likely to know about other options, Firefox users tend to look down on the IE users, and Safari fans tend to think anything Apple is superior no matter what product is featured.

Ok, I'm really stereotyping but the unfortunate truth is that stereotypes are based on some fact. This graph showing the current landscape of browser market share provides insight, and dare I say substantiates my stereotypes.

I think the first thing to notice is IE7 is still more used than 8. Which shows that most IE users might not care to update or may not even know that there is an update. Compare that to Firefox users, where it didn't even take a month before the new version surpassed the previous 2.0.

Combining all the Internet Explorers together shows that Microsoft still have quite a hold on the market. But Firefox is dangerously close to having the most used version of any browser available. Perhaps this is telling us that as people become more informed of their options they are switching over to Firefox. Then looking at Safari users they haven't increased or decreased, showing us the Apple community might not be growing or declining.

Today, I've heavily interpreted facts which always looks different to others. So, let me hear what you think of the current landscape of web browsers. Are you a Firefox, IE, or Safari user? What makes one browser superior to the others in your mind?

The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and ideas of the WebProWorld community.

Ranking Method

Ranking Method
I have a site that allows my members to rate people in three different categories. all the categories you can rate people from 1 to 5 and if you rate someone you have to rate them in all three categories.

I want to be able to give all the people that have been rated a rank. I have tried several different ways but none of them seem to work properly

Right now im working with getting the overall average, but this doesn't work because multiple people can have a average of 5 and this makes it hard to rank that person.

Any ideas that may work are welcome

How do you get Google to get the answer to a question.

A few days ago I got this error when trying to mount a windows share into a FreeBSD server.

mount_smbfs: unable to open connection: syserr = Permission denied

When I put the error message into Google I got every forum where this question was asked. Great! This question has made the rounds. Problem --- no one answered the question or even worse the question was answered incorrectly. Anyone have any suggestions in how to eliminate unanswered post from a Google search. I found the answer on a Dragon Fly BSD forum which the original Google search never even found.

Is there perhaps a better search engine for these types of questions?

AJAX Application Has To Work In Several Languages

I have an AJAX application related to the oil industry that needs to have a multilingual capability. Initially it has to be in French and English, with the capability of adding other languages later on.

The application mainly consists of short phrases rather than large chunks of text so the actual translation of those individual phrases is relatively straightforward. In fact, Google Translate does a pretty good job of many of them, and the Google tool has an AJAX interface too. Much of the work can therefore be done within the application. This means that users can switch language on the fly and new program features can be added in English with a fair chance that the automated translation won't make too big a fist of things.

I've sketched out some ideas on how it should be possible to make it work at: Activeminds Blog - Multi-Language Support - July 5th 2009 and I'm interested in some feedback about whether you think I'm on the right track or not.
