WebProWorld Members,
If you're involved in the world of internet
marketing, then you know how important
it is to track consumers. After all, how can you
advertise if you have no idea what people want to
see?
This creates quite a conundrum, because I'd wager
that most people would say they don't want to be
tracked. This is the United States, and privacy
is one of the rights that many people like to think
is secure. This entire brew of problems has caught
the eye of the FTC.
There're few downers worse in any industry than
to be investigated by the FTC.
Therefore, several online marketing associations
have devised a way to police themselves. Their first
step is to create a basic set of principles to abide
by, and are as follows..
I. Education
II. Transparency
III. Consumer Control
IV. Data Security
V. Material Changes to Existing Online Behavioral
Advertising Policies and Practices
VI. Sensitive Data
VII. Accountability
Of course it's easy to just create a list of principles,
but how will it be enforced? There haven't been
any concrete details worked out, but Pablo Chavez
of Google has voiced
a broad strategy, "One of the key strengths
of the principles is the fact that they apply to
a broad range of companies participating in online
advertising -- advertisers, publishers, and ad networks.
Of course, for any self-regulatory effort to be
effective, there has to be some kind of enforcement
process. Between now and early 2010 -- when the
principles are expected to be implemented -- the
Better Business Bureau and Direct Marketing Association,
two of the groups involved, will work to set up
that process to make sure it has real teeth."
What are your thoughts on the continuing saga of
internet marketing and privacy? Where do
you fall in the balance between tracking, and privacy?
As always, feel free to email me or start a topic
on WPW. Have a great 4th of July weekend.

Emails bouncing to free email accounts
OK, I assume we are all familiar with this. Its a huge pain in the ***. I have a lot of enquiries and a good deal of the emails I answer to free email accounts (hotmail, Yahoo, Live, etc) keep being blocked by their servers. This is not all emails and is quite random with some of my customers getting responce one day and not the next. I have emailed hotmail before, they have whitelisted our emails, but it only goes back to the normal rejections after a few days.
My question is, does anyone have a solution to dealing with this. I have implemented a help desk system which works great, but I feel my customers are reluctant to use it as they need to do a little more than usual to communicate. I have both a contact us page and help desk page and about 1% use the help desk.
Is there some way of getting all my emails through.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

AS400 and Odd Characters
*Please feel free to move this post if it is in the wrong place.
I've got an issue at work with an AS400 system. I'm not an AS400 person - my knowledge of them is simply entering information. The problem is.. I can't convince the AS400 team that there is a problem.
The break down....
Starting on June 11th of this year we started having problems with what I can "invalid characters" halting the display of information. The characters are plus signs, cent signs, exclamation marks, parantheses, etc. These characters display differently between the GUI version and the Green Screen version of the AS400 - the cent sign (green screen) appears as a paranthese (GUI) even though it's made using shift + 6 ( ^ ) - this translates into dual question marks (??) in my program. The problem is, these symbols in orders created before 2009 don't play well with the XML Parser.
The AS400 group is convinced it is my program, I'm convinced it is theres.... "invalid" characters entered into my program don't appear in my program or when sent back to the AS400 system. The characters only appear when created in the AS400 system. Now... I could be crazy but to me that says it is the AS400 system that has the problem. Thing is, I don't know how to convince the AS400 team of this.
Anyone have any suggestions? Or, am I wrong? Is it my program?

Google Services Which are Shut Down
I know this post happened in January... But it is a good reminder in these economic times that not even Google who makes billions of dollars per year can afford to keep great services running.

What Comes Next in Social Media?
The coming of Oprah and Ashton Kutcher to Twitter brought a whole new meaning to the way the social site is perceived today and will be perceived in the future, according to social media expert Chris Brogan. He relates the situation to when the telephone came about saying that with Twitter, some will reject the service after a time, but there will still be newcomers anxious to get involved.
