I've heard Google called many a different things
since its inception. 'Greatest browser ever',
'Emperor of the Internet', are just a couple
of descriptions I've heard given to the search
giant.
Something I've never heard Google called is, vampire.
That's exactly the descriptor used by Dow Jones
Chief Executive Les Hinton during his keynote
speech at a large Media Outlook conference. Here's
Hinton's exact words,
"There is a charitable view of the history
of Google,” said Mr. Hinton, who is also
publisher of The Wall Street Journal. “[It]
didn’t actually begin life in a cave as
a digital vampire per se. The charitable view
of Google is that the news business itself fed
Google’s taste for this kind of blood."
I had to read that twice to make sure the words
were real. I mean really? I don't
want to say that Hinton is stupid, but he and
many newspaper CEOs are ignorant. The difference
is that I truly believe they just don't understand
how Google news works, or how aggregators work
in general. I think if someone would teach them,
their comprehension would show that services like
Google news helps their business.
I'd gurantee that most of you reading this receive
their news from Google news, or the like. Instead
of trying to start some kind of feud with Google,
why not find better ways to partner with them?
Seems like a much better business arrangement.
I only write for blogs, and newsletters though...so
what would I know? ;)

The real SEO tool
I wonder if The best seo tool, hardware or software could simply be common sense. This a a free tool and should possibly be used in conjunction with a site statistics program.
An intelligent viewing of page statistics should tell you if anyone has visited, how long they stayed, where they came from . . The simple obvious truth is having a clear understanding of what has actually happened is far more valuable than most tools that merely attempt to blandly predict what might happen.
WPW has a constant flow of webmasters seeking the best way to better the competition, the best way to become number one? . The answer is all around us. The universe we live in has some simple rules that none of us should ever forget.
If this universe liked competition. that is if our world liked competition - every creature on it would be the same. There would be no birds no insects. . . Dogs do not eat insects, dogs do not compete with birds, cattle do not compete with dogs, crocodiles do not compete with cattle. . . Plumbers do not compete with chicken farmers. Success by natures laws it totally biased towards uniqueness. The Best seo is your intelligence. Do you really want to compete with the whole world for the same spot? . . The answer to this question may not be instantly a simple Yes. . or No.
The best answer is a logical look at exactly what it is that you are aiming for - and simply learn and observe from natures laws. This means you should be picking a pathway to follow, that weaves between your imagined competitors. there is a very good chance you can bypass a huge proportion of them using simple observation.
It is hard to give a specific example because every webmaster
is unique, this obvious observation. That each of us is
unique is precisely the reason we should not all follow
the same pathway. . this should be self evident...

Privacy Law question
Which law(s) in the U.S. say you have to have a privacy statement. I need to prove we are obligated to have a privacy statement to sell things online and.or collect personal info online.
I've been doing research but just can't seem to find the law, except for specialty laws like COPPA (kids privacy) and the one for financial institutions . . .

Major 404 Issue
This is a complex issue, so please bear with me.
I have a blog, for the longest time it was on it's own domain. At least twice I lost the db and had to start over (another long story). Recently I moved my blog from this domain to a subfolder of my company's site to integrate it into the site.
When I moved it over I 301ed the original domain to the new subfolder to move the link juice.
At some point I redid my permalink structure (I'm using Wordpress) from /year/month/day/post to just /post/ I used a permalink plugin to make sure everything moved smoothly during that.
But now I'm having a major 404 errors (more than 1400!). My site still ranks pretty high for the keywords we want, but there are way too many 404's.
A lot of these 404's are referring to pages that are a few crashes and moves ago. I don't know how they are still pointing. I tried telling Google to remove them and it looked like they took in the Google Webmaster Toolbox. But I still have a huge amount of 404's.
I'm really perplexed. Any suggestions?

Making Social Media Worth Your While
Is social media really worth all the effort? That’s the question that many CEOs ask their marketing teams. It’s hard for the C-level executives to understand where the true value of social lies since the results take time and are not always in dollar amounts. Based upon research from his company Meteor Solutions, Ben Straley says they have found that social media actually plays a large role in the success of online marketing campaigns.
