WebProWorld Members,
There have been a few times that I've written
about the dying integration of Flash animations
in websites. Flash started off as a cool trend
then was found to have no search enhancing properties
and led to slow load times.
You can still find Flash sites here and there,
but you have to really know where to look. Because
most likely they won't be appearing in Google's
top search results. Well, Google looks to be changing
that mindset with their latest announcement.
Google will now begin indexing external resource
loading. This basically means that Google's Flash
indexing capabilities will be come stronger than
before. The question is; How much better will
they be?
An
official blog for Google lists some improvements
you can expect to see for indexing SWF files in
the future:
- Index textual content displayed as a user interacts
with the file. We click buttons and enter input,
just like a user would.
- Discover links within Flash files.
- Load external resources and associate the content
with the parent file.
- Support common JavaScript techniques for embedding
Flash, such as SWFObject and SWFObject2.
- Index sites scripted with AS1 and AS2, even
if the ActionScript is obfuscated. Update on June
19, 2009: We index sites with AS3 as well. The
ActionScript version isn't particularly relevant
in our Indexing process, so we support older versions
of AS in addition to the latest.
Those are some pretty significant improvements
indeed. Of course this is all 'on paper'. If you
do utilize SWF files on your site, keep an eye
out and see how your page rank varies in the future.
The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter
editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and
ideas of the WebProWorld community.

SEO for redirected domains
My friend wants to rank in local search engines. He has set up domain.com, domain.ie,
domain.co.uk, domain.de, domain.in etc. But all the TLDs
redirect to .com
How to proceed with such a project? Will it help to
do SEO for domains that redirect to .com?
Or, he should maintain all domains, put unique content
and then send the buyers to the .com domain on conversion
page? What do you suggest?

Search Engine Results / Page Rank issue
I've been doing SEO on a certain site for several years now (I'll keep the names out for now), and have been comparing it to a competitor's site. Here are some stats:
Site 1:
Number of pages: About 15
Page rank: 5
Backlinks: about 40
Keyword density on front page: Minimal, main key phrase I typed in isn't even on front page
Front page text: about 30 words, mostly a picture
Google results for specific keyphrase: #1
Time to renew domain: about 4 years
Time domain has bee live: about 10 years
Site 2:
Number of pages: About 100
Page rank: 3
Backlinks: about 1850
Keyword density on front page: Better; main key phrase in title, H1, and one more place on page
Front page text: about 375 words
Google results for specific keyphrase: #2
Time to renew domain: about 12 years
Time domain has been live: about 7 years
As you can tell, site 2 has a much better backlink rank, better keywords on the front page, more relevant text on the front page, more pages on the site... basically, it blows site 1 out of the water, but the page rank is lower and it always comes up #2 for a specific result. The only thing site 1 has going for it is that it's been live longer, but I've beat out older sites before.
Without seeing the actual sites, can anyone think of a reason why this would happen? It's been this way for years.

Demographic adjustment concerns
Anyone have experience with using the demographic bid adjustments on campaigns?
My understanding is that Google has basically decided that it makes sense to adjust bids upward by some percent based on age / gender / both (for content network only). In addition, you set it at the campaign level which means it is applied to all keywords in that campaign as far as I can tell.
>> Is anyone out there actively using this feature?
Though it is simple to understand, I personally find the way they implemented it to be quite coarse. I wonder if there is research that justifies % bid adjustments vs some other kind (like a fixed CPC to be added to each keyword bid).
>> Do % adjustments make sense?
Also bothered by the fact that while ROI measurements might justify a bid adjustment of x% on some of the keywords in a given campaign, that it is certainly not obvious to me that all keywords should get the same x% boost.
>> Anyone else think that the 'correct' bid adjustment for a specific age group would vary from keyword to keyword within a given campaign?
Sorry Im having trouble framing the questions - let me know whats not clear if you feel like taking a stab. Guess I am trying reconcile the fact that googles implementation seems quite arbitrary, and looking to see if anyone has experience / data to validate their approach.

Web Servers
Server cache problems?
Not sure where to post this but hoping for some good advice.
On my site I have a photo of the day, each week I move
these to a voting page for photo of the week etc..
Basically each week at midnight on Saturday I upload
7 new photos...
This week I have uploaded many times overwriting and
even then deleting and re uploading the photos....only
to find the previous weeks still there!
I am using the same FTP upload as the past three years...
Sometimes I need to refresh several times to get the
new photos to appear...
I am generally using Firefox to browse but have now
also tried refreshing in Explorer to no avail....
All the other photos I uploaded at the same time are
appearing OK
This makes it difficult to maintain the website if
I cant see the changes I have uploaded...I try to keep
my site dynamic and make changes everyday...
Any suggestions I would be grateful....
FYI I am using a wireless connection for uploading
and browsing.
I have also tried adding ?action=purge to the end of
the URL all to no avail!
I have checked many times to make sure I am not uploading
the same 7 photos!
Also deleted all the thumbs.db files
