WebProWorld Members,
Now that Bing has released, have you wondered how
long Microsoft is willing to ride this pony? According
to Ian Sherr of Reuters, $2.25 billion worth.
Yes, you read that correctly.
According to Sherr, Ballmer is prepared to spend
5-10% of Microsoft's operating income to make Bing
successful. Here's Ballmer's thoughts on investing
in Bing,
"Our shareholders, I told them we were
willing to spend 5 to 10 percent of operating income
for up to five years in this business, and we feel
like we can get an economic return" and
then compares this to the Xbox, "We invested
in Xbox for years and now it generates nice economic
returns for us"
In a seperate
article in the Wall Street Journal, Ballmer
talks about the biggest mistake in the industry
-- quitting early. With Bing, Ballmer is banking
on the prospect of enticing people to switch from
the industry leaders Yahoo, and Google to their
'decision engine'.
After reading both articles about Ballmer, and Bing
I'm left puzzled. I believe that Ballmer isn't focusing
on the right points. I do respect his, and Microsoft's
dedication to the search industry from a financial
aspect. However, money only takes you so far. They
might be willing to spend $2.25 billion; but on
what? The amount might be significant but if there's
no plan for what the money is used for then it sounds
like empty ham fisting.
Until shareholders find out what the money is going
to be used for, I would remain cautious. For instance,
if Microsoft is going to be throwing it away in
advertising instead of R&D. With as many Bing
commercials I've seen in the past couple of weeks,
no dollar amount in that department would surprise
me.
The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter
editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and
ideas of the WebProWorld community.

Newbie CSS (ie6) formatting problem
 |
First of all I would like to introduce myself! My name is Ash, I live in Australia and I'm currently working on a website for a business our family will be starting up in the next few months! I have had many years of experience in the I.T industry however have never specialized in any sort of web programming.
After many years of experimenting with CMS's & Basic HTML websites I have started to teach myself the wonderful world of XHTML + CSS (for SEO), and boy have I learnt alot! Needless to say, when 'self-teaching' the learning curve is steep when trying to produce an idea without going back to 'grade 1'. I have tried to follow the basic rules of web page creation and have done plenty of market research to decide on a decent layout, etc (for seo etc, which will be my next tackle!)
I think *so far* I've done pretty well considering that i'm a beginner, and have restructured the site a few times already due to the learning processes (even though site previously passed the XHTML test + sitereportcard, there was *IMO* incorrect use of tags etc).
My problem now lies with the CSS (I believe). I have the site looking just how I want it to in 8, Firefox 3.5(b) and Chrome (Chrome being my default browser of choice) - however as soon as I view the page in IE6, everything goes out of wack - and I'm hoping some of the experienced here could help me resolve the problem.
I have spent many hours trying *different* things but could never manage to get it looking how it should; e.g; changing float values, padding values, and many more and combinations of - in the end I changed things so much that I decided to just take it back to the way I had it before I began to look into fixing it to ask for some professional advice!!
As you can see (I hope) in your *recently released* browser how I would like it to look, everything lined up and looking 'ok' but then try in IE6 and see how the navigations goes out of wack, and the corner top and bottom images move position also.
Any help would be appreciated, you could save me hours of frustrating editing!!!
Test page is located at ;

on third look, IE7 also isn't correct either. (using IETester software for compatibility views)

Duplicate Content and Different Languages
I'm wondering if having translated versions of a site (in this case 4 sites in total all in different languages) counts as duplicate content.
Thanks in anticipation!

a organized-layererd-PSD file instead and I should hire
a coder for $30 which will do the rest. Wo is correct

Stocked in making double dynamic dependent select list
in php
I have read and watched and tried 2 million times to create the same thing that is in the tutorials in "Dynamic populating the drop down list based on the selected value of first list" but when I want to change it to my own website and convert it the way that works with my website I get stocked and it doesn't work!
I have 2 tables in mysql database; one is """car_names""" which contains the brand of the cars like: BENZ, BMW, NISSAN, HONDA, ...... and this table has 4 rows as below: :
1=> id
2=> menu_name
3=> position
4=> visible
the second table is """car_models""" which contains the type of the cars related to the first table like: 220E, 330E, civic, accord, sunny, .... and this table has 5 rows as below:
1=> id
2=> carname_id
3=> menu_name
4=> position
5=> visible
As I have created my web page in php I have 2 dropdown select lists that if you choose any car from the first list it works perfectly and brings me all the car's names from the first table from the database>>> menu_name's row. BUT if I choose for example HONDA from the first list the second list still remains empty. I have tried to change the code the I have downloaded from Dynamic populating the drop down list based on the selected value of first list and replace it with mine in or exchange some parts with my code but it didn't work!
I will really appreciate your helps and comments.
Please help me to get this code work for my website, it has been a headache for me about 2 months already!
I don't know how to upload the files here in this website but if you need I can send you the mypage with mysql database files for you.

MOM Proves Value of Social Media
I think it’s safe to say that social media has taken the world by storm. It even plays a large role in the business sector. There is however one problem that businesses have with social media: they want quantifiable results. Many businesses mistakenly believe that their social campaigns are not working if they cannot see growth in dollars.
