After doing research for today's newsletter
topic, I truly believe the government has a committee
for everything. Don't believe me, then read the
heading for
this document.
The document above is testimony from Nicole Wong,
Deputy General Counsel for Google. Wong is presenting
the testimony before government committees concerned
with privacy implications surrounding behavioral
advertising.
If you don't want to read the entire document,
I'll pick out the main sections for you. The major
plot point of Wong's testimony is that behavioral
advertising actually benefit s
users. Here's a statement from Wong's testimony
summarizing her argument in favor of behavioral
advertising,
"We do this through our innovative ad
auction system, which evaluates the relevance
or usefulness of an ad to our users based on their
search queries or the content that they are viewing.
And in our pay-per-click pricing model, we generate
revenue only when a user isinterested enough to
click on an ad."
That all sounds great, but should Google be tracking
user's activities? Is there not concerns regarding
privacy? Wong takes these questions on with clever
insight,
"When users see online ads today, they
often don’t know what information is being
collected, who provided the ad, and sometimes
who the advertiser is. We already clearly label
most of the ads provided by Google on the AdSense
partner network and on YouTube. The vast majority
of Google Content Network ads contain in-ad notice,
letting users with one click get more information
about how we serve ads, and the information we
use to show ads. This year we
will expand the range of ad formats and publishers
that display links that provide a way to learn
more and make choices about Google’s ad
serving."
Only time will tell if Wong made an impression
on the committees and sub-committees. After reading
her testimony, I'm still iffy towards behavioral
advertising. While it's a benefit for a good amount
of people, there's still something about 'tracking'
someone that just doesn't seem right.
The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter
editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and
ideas of the WebProWorld community.

Site Restructure Impact on Search Referrals
We are moving our site from a table-based layout to css as well as doing some other significant enhancements to the site. When we first created the site back in 2003 using a web design program, we unwittingly accepted the default directory where the html files are kept >> www. businessperform.com/html/
Later on, we did create other directories to store specific html files and did do 301 redirects for older files. We are now considering restructuring the directories at the same time as we upgrade the site. I am worried about the impact on our search ranking and search referrals by doing this.
My main worries are that a restructure will upset our inbound links and doing a 301 redirect on all /html/ pages will lead to a huge htaccess file. Currently, all 400 of our pages are indexed in Google, etc.
The current structure with number of pages and number of pages with at least one inbound link is:
/ (18 files -pdf, doc- with inbound links)
/html 135 pages (80 pages with inbound links)
/articles 194 pages (39 pages with inbound links)
/links
/newsletters
The idea is to redistribute the 135 pages in /html/ to five or six other directories, all under the root. Inbound links are as reported by Google Webmaster Tools. Currently, our htaccess file lists 178 301 redirects. 161 of those are redirects to the /articles directory. What if we simply redirect in htaccess only those pages with inbound links (some 119 pages)? If we add all old pages to htaccess, it will have 329 redirects. Won't that be too many for fast access?
This site produces our main business income, so we can't afford to upset Google for too long. Who has done such a restructure and lived to tell the story? How did you do it successfully? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Apache
Large Apache log files
I need to delete the current domlog files from an Apache server (/usr/local/apache/domlogs/, as the files have become too large and I need to reset the service.
But I also need to keep a record of previous years website stats.
At the moment the only way I know how to read these stats, is in awstats on the server, but is there a way to read those files off the server, on my local machine? If I download them, they are ms-dos application files.
Over the years the stats files have just become too big and now it is difficult to update them at all and they use so much space, so my only option seems to be to delete them and reset the stats logs to start recording afresh, but I cant find any info anywhere on how to keep a record of the previous years stats if I do that. I can backup the files, but I am not sure how to handle the log file and access its stats once it is off the server.

Taking unwanted Product Pages out of site
I want to take product pages out of my website from a dropshipper i know longer want to use. I pay a monthly fee to use them and i dont get any traffic to these pages. I have had them for 2 years and have only made one sale. I have other dropshippers i want to keep using because i am making sales. The pages i want to take out are between 500 to 600 pages. My site has about 1800 right now. What i want is feedback on how i should go about removing these pages the right way. This is my first website and this is a large change for it. I thank anyone that will take there time to help me out with this change i want to make.

MOM Proves Value of Social Media
I think it’s safe to say that social media has taken the world by storm. It even plays a large role in the business sector. There is however one problem that businesses have with social media: they want quantifiable results. Many businesses mistakenly believe that their social campaigns are not working if they cannot see growth in dollars.
