WebProWorld Members,
"Competition is a painful thing, but
it produces great results."
- Jerry Flint
It's a simple quote, but rings true.
As industries come and go, the competition to
strive and perform better than your rival will
always remain constant. Even when there's flying
cars, and mind reading devices. If you need proof,
look no further than the current state of the
search engine world.
If you haven't had a chance to check out Bing
yet, I highly recommend it. I'm not saying you
should switch to Bing, from Google. However, there
are some killer ideas being utilized for the 'Decision
Engine'. Apparently I'm not the only one to notice
this.
According to James Doran of the New York Post,
Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google has taken
notice of what Bing is bringing to the table,
"But co-founder Sergey Brin is so rattled
by the launch of Microsoft's rival search engine
that he has assembled a team of top engineers
to work on urgent upgrades to his Web service,
The Post has learned."
Barring some potential exaggeration, Doran
provides a good point. I'd say that Google is
taking notice of what Bing is doing. Like they
should be. Complacency is never a good thing in
business; it hurts a company, but most importantly
it's a negative for consumers. Which is where
the idea of competition comes in.
Do you think Google would be gathering engineers
to make upgrades if Bing hadn't rattled their
cage? Even if you're a Google fanboy, you can
appreciate that someone has lit a fire under the
now dominant search giant. I really can't wait
to see what becomes of it. The Ultimate Badass
Engine to End All Search Engines perhaps?
Let's hope so.
The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter
editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and
ideas of the WebProWorld community.

PR4 To PR3 Washdown Rank
I have quite a basic question for the pros out there. I have an opportunity to receive a link off the front page of a relevant PR4 website. My supplier site. In return though i need to link directly to them off my front page.
The question is, is it entirely beneficial? I have a PR3 Website and they have a PR4 website. Would i gain more by having that link? I know it sounds daft because the ratio looks good, but the fact is i have no links off my site at the moment. Then when i do put one on in my category i loose a step automatically, that i have to build back by having the PR4 link which just puts me back to where i was? Hope this makes sense.

Bizarre Google and Yahoo CTR's!
I wonder if anyone could shed some light on some strange PPC stats - I am running some PPC across Google and Yahoo , I'm using exactly the same ad text , call to actions etc but I am getting very different CTR's.
In Google the CTR is 10% but for exactly the same ads in Yahoo the CTR is 2%???
I would be very grateful if anyone could shed any light on this.

When Websites Say "Make A Donation"
I've seen websites that say "make a donation to this website". If a website is FOR profit ie operating as an S corp, LLC, etc. how can it ask for donations? Isn't that reserved for charities? I'm asking for two reasons: 1. I do not want to establish a business relationship with a business that is not operating above board. and 2. I'm curious as to the legality of such a thing. BTW, I'm talking about US owned business that are operating in the United States.

Just before SMX Advanced kicked off, Microsoft announced its new search engine Bing. So, you can only imagine what a hot topic it was at the show. People had many opinions consisting of good, bad, and indifferent reactions to the search engine.
