Today for the WebProWorld newsletter we're going
to be discussing everyone's favorite topic --
politics. YAY! Ok, so politics
aren't something you see a lot when talking about
search or social media. If you've been keeping
an eye on certain places you've noticed the two
entities merge together.
What I think really kick started the social media
revolution for politics was the YouTube and online
popularity of Ron Paul. On TV you more than likely
didn't see Ron Paul during the Republican primary.
Watch the primary debates and you'll see what
I'm talking about. However, if you were keeping
up with him on YouTube
or his website
-- the online popularity was unparalleled....
That was until another huge social media/search
sensation came along; someone you might
know -- Barack Obama. Just like Paul, he took
the online world by storm and in doing (for other
reasons as well ;) ) secured his spot as the President
of the United States. Something that impressed
me about Obama's campaign was in the area of politics
and openness, and how it relates to social networking/media.
Before he edited down his campaign
site, he had this to say about Government
2.0,
"Making government data available online
in universally accessible formats to allow citizens
to make use of that data to comment, derive value,
and take action in their own communities. Greater
access to environmental data, for example, will
help citizens learn about pollution in their communities,
provide information about local conditions back
to government and empower people to protect themselves."
The New York State Office for Technology has
followed this course of action, as they have
embraced social media. It might be a small step,
but any step in making the government more transparent
is in the right direction. Also, I did some searching
for my own state, Kentucky. The state government
has a Twitter
account, but unfortunately doesn't have a
presence on Facebook. How about your local/state
governments, have they embraced social media/networking?
The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter
editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and
ideas of the WebProWorld community.

95% of Blogs Abandoned
Since most bloggers don't update their blogs, the ones that do get more attention from Google.
The problem is that most people lack the understanding of how to get the most out of their blogs and give up the second they don’t make any type of an income.
I’ve been making good money with my blogs for the last three years however, mine are created to convert a certain product and the content is below the call to action for that product.
I’ve done a good bit of testing and have found that building a blog and loading it down with ads doesn’t work. However, creating a blog like a website with a call to action does.
Blogs, like websites, are a great way to make money but to make money with them they need to look and feel more like a websites and less like a billboard. It’s a lot easier to drive traffic to a blog than to a website but you have to know what to do with the traffic when it arrives.
Just my two cents.

Banner Link Code Optimization
I'm creating a section on my site for resources of news and advice related to the products my site sells. Also I am creating a banner for people who may want to add our site to their links page, however we're not making it a requirement.
Basically what I want to know is what is the best way to optimize the banner link code that would offer the most benefit to my site SEO wise if/when we do get a link from another site.

Arachnophilia?
I've been looking back at old threads, seeking suggestions on open-source (really, "free") html editors, and I don't see that anyone has mentioned Arachnophilia. I'm wondering if those that have played with it found it seriously lacking, or if the others mentioned were just that much better. The same holds true for PageBreeze.
Any opinions on either of these, anyone?

Latest Drama with Canonical Tags and Duplicate Content
We first told you about the Canonical Tag back in February as the three major search players announced their joint effort. The industry responded favorably since the tag would give users more control as well as reduce duplicate content. The four major search engines now support the Canonical Link Element.
