With every great invention, there's a person
or group of people behind it that can sometimes
be just as big as the invention itself. Bill Gates,
Steve Jobs are just examples of when the designer
is just as known as the inventions themselves.
Unless you're deep in knowledge of the history
behind Google, then the name
Rajeev Motwani might elude you. He might me one
of the most important names you don't recognize
however.
Admittedly, I had heard of Rajeev Motwani
but I personally never took the time to find out
why he was so big in the search community. It's
definitely a loss on my part, as he's been lauded
not just as a brilliant mind but one that was
gracious, and understanding.
You might not have heard of Motwani, but if you
know you're Google then you've heard of the co-founders
Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Well, Motwani was
their computer science professor, and provide
much needed support when they were coming up with
Google. In Brin's
blog post about Motwani, it sounds like his
former professor provided guidance that would
eventually lead to the research necessary to start
Google,
"When my interest turned to data mining,
Rajeev helped to coordinate a regular meeting
group on the subject. Even though I was just one
of hundreds of graduate students in the department,
he always made the time and effort to help. Later,
when Larry and I began to work together on the
research that would lead to Google, Rajeev was
there to support us and guide us through challenges,
both technical and organizational."
Motwani's death came by way of accidental drowning,
and is survived by his wife and kids. If you'd
like to read to read more about the man, Om
Malik has written an informative post on his friend.

Spider Frequency in Google
I want to increase the frequency at which Google spiders my site. I have a site with about 2,000 pages of unique content (product and website reviews and articles) all written internally. We have a blog that we post on 4-5 times a day but it can still take a week before I see a post in Google results. The blog on the site is only a few months old and we really started posting constantly on it in the past 45 days.
I know when CNN posts a story, sometimes within minutes you can search it in Google. I use to own blogster.com and we would have hundreds of posts a day and generally within a few hours something posted on the site would be in Google.
My assumption is that Google checks your site and when it comes back and there are changes, it says to itself, "hey maybe I should check this site more frequently" (yes, I here Googlebot talking to itself in my head). Basically, Google will increase it's spidering of your site as long as it keeps finding the pages are changing.
First, are my assumptions about this correct?
Second, any tips on how to get Google to check back more frequently and get into Google faster.

CTR percentage
This is probably going to be a hard question to answer, but what sort of CTR should be expected or achieved on a PPC campaign?
We previously used a recognised partner to do our PPC, however we have taken it in-house and have managed to double the CTR.
We have also adjusted some adverts and gotten a better CTR from original versions by changing the ad.
So what is a common target value that people work to, given the ad is seen, it matches your target and keyword.
Our campaigns are rating between 0.9% for a very competitve keyword up to 12% for a more targeted phrase.
The low percentage campaign is for a highly competivite term, that encompasses both low quailty products to very high quality products, that sadly is either a 1 or 2 keyword pharse.
So I guess that leads to a second question, are adwords for single word "common" terms a waste of time, and is it better to concentrate on niche words.
Regarding bounce rates, it varies, some have high bounce rates because the landing page is not designed for a specifc keyword. I can work on that, however at the moment I want to know if I should target 5, 10, 15 or 50% CTR i.e. optimise the advert to achieve a certain CTR.

Java Web Services Returning SVG Image
I am creating a J2ME application which needs to generate dynamic charts for the user.
The data for generating the charts is stored on a web server. In order to have minimal computations on the mobile device, I want to generate the charts on the web server itself.
I have written a code which generates svg (svg tiny) charts dynamically on a web server based on sql queries on a database . Now I want a J2ME client app to be able to retrieve this data through a web service.
Can someone guide me as to how to return svg files from a java web service.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Diagnosing What's Wrong with Your Website
When you diagnose a problem with your website, first make sure you actually have a real problem. The most obvious indication of a problem is a traffic drop. But before you start making modifications and wasting a lot of precious time, look at your analytics to confirm that you have a real problem.
