Bing!, we now know the name of the super secret search project that Microsoft has been working on for sometime. I know it's exciting but everytime I hear the name, I think of this scene from Groundhog Day (skip to 0:13). Using a word uttered by the insurance salesman, Ned Ryerson doesn't bode well for my personal use.

Putting Groundhog Day references aside, there were some interesting features announced concerning Bing! There definitely wasn't a shortage of tweets, and live blog announcements at the D7 Conference where Bing was first made known.

After all my research about what went down at D7, there were a couple of key references that really drove home the idea of what Bing! is all about.

The first distinction I received was Microsoft's description of Bing! as a 'decision engine' instead of a search engine. If you watch the YouTube video, and read about the demo it seems that Microsoft might be onto something with making the service about decision making more than search. So, what does that mean exactly? Without actually getting my hands on the service, it seems to me that Bing is more about keeping everything 'inclusive'.

If you watch that YouTube video, the section they show when trying to find different airfares; the user never navigates away from Bing. This of course leads to the inevitable question about how content owners will view Bing. Apparently, Walt Mossberg had the same question when he asked about how content owners will view Bing. Here was Ballmer's response...

"We’re not trying to get in the way of copyright holders...If value should be redivided somehow between content providers, advertisers and search engines, let’s have that conversation…We’re not trying to profit off of anyone else’s work."

That's a pretty general statement concerning something that will be put under heavy scrutiny. Of course, it's hard to say how any of this will pan out considering the service isn't live yet. I'll be putting Bing on refresh for awhile, and sacrifice the annoyance of hearing Ned Ryerson binging Bill Murray in my head. Watch Groundhog Day if you haven't seen it by the way; great movie.

New Adwords Interface / Conversions

New Adwords Interface / Conversions
Just so I am sure I understand this correctly....:- What is the difference between conversions (1-per-click) and conversions (many-per-click)? When should I use them? - AdWords Help

Basically says that you can have more than one 'conversion' per visit. e.g. someone may click on your advert and then sign up to your newsletter AND buy a blue widget at the same time...

This visit would be logged as one conversion in the 'Conversions (1-per-click)' column, and two conversions in the 'Conversions (many-per-click)' column. OK - that bit is easy to understand.

But say, that I only have ONE conversion page on my site, (One enquiry form), and the 2 columns do not match up....?

As I understand it, if someone makes an enquiry, and then makes another separate enquiry up to 29 days later it is counted as 2 conversions in the many per click column but only one in the one per click column..

But what if someone submits the same enquiry twice accidentally, is this counted as 2 conversion in the many per click column as well?

i.e. I think I am seeing a few repeat enquiries - but maybe I am not?

Hits from China Screwing up Analytics!

Yo yo yo! Can anyone give me a solution to a Google Analytics problem?

One of my clients is getting loads of unrelated hits from China. These hits are due to a very similar domain name being used by a popular Chinese Youtube style site. There's not much we can do about it!

The main thing I want to do is remove the chinese IP data from Google Analytics. Does anyone know how I can do this? I dont want to block all the Chinese IPs as this would possibly block some potential customers... does anyone have any thoughts please?

Do Adsense links improve your Website's Optimization?

I was just looking at a website selling B&B accommodation and noted that they have a single line of ads from Google's Adsense at the bottom of their page. The ads are hardly noticeable. The font for the ads is small and the color and background are so similar they almost look like hidden text. The location would hurt their click results and that seems totally intentional.

My guess is the links to Adsense are not there to make money. I think they are there to improve website optomization. So, my question to you is Do Adsense links improve a Website's Optimization?

The cynical person in me thinks that Google would help a website making them money with ads get higher ranking. Alternatively, would changing ad content make the website appear to have updating content?

Subscribe to Artist Gallery

I have a client who owns an art gallery. They want people to be able to subscribe to different artists' galleries on the website so they get an email update every time a new image is added.

I have looked around a bit and haven't found anything that fits the bill exactly. They need to be able to add artists and their work themselves.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to implement such a thing?

Social Networking with a Velvet Rope
Do you know what a velvet rope social network is? To summarize, it is an invitation-only social network as social media expert Chris Brogan explains in the above video. A velvet rope social network creates an “exclusive” feeling. It’s the idea that everyone wants to know what’s on the “inside” and have special privileges.
