Welcome to the second chapter, in the two part
series about local SEO. Yesterday,
I mentioned that a good starting point when conducting
loca SEO is Google Maps. Now, we move on to the
second step...
So you've added your site or business to Google
Maps, now where to go? Well this is where it can
get tough. Certainly you should spruce up your
website with local based keywords. Some simple
things you can add: an address in your footer
on all pages, quick access for directions to your
store, write about local culture if you have a
blog.
After localizing your actual site, it's on to
link building. Here's where you want to be careful.
Your first, and primary focus will be to add your
site to local directories. If you talk to certain
people, directory can be a nasty word.
There's good reason for that, as there are plenty
of 'spammy' directories out there. When you are
researching a directory, do a clean sweep of the
different categories they offer. Make sure automotive
based businesses is all they have listed under
that category. This gives you a good indication
of the integrity of the site.
Something you should be doing for your business,
online and off is becoming involved in your community.
Whether you live in a small town, or city people
tend to attach themselves to where they are. If
customers know a business is involved in their
area then it adds a sense of belonging. For creating
a community presence online you have a few options.
Having some type of blog not only helps with SEO
like I mentioned, but establishes credibility
with your users. Next you can find other sites
to exchange links with which is the more traditional
method. Nothing wrong with that. Then get into
the upstart world of social media. Facebook, Twitter
and others have established local communities
within their sites. Get in good with them and
you have the potential to have a powerful, and
focused following.
That concludes the local SEO series. I hope I
was able to provide some pointers for getting
started. As always, feel free to email me or drop
a topic down in the forums. Have a great weekend!

editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and

Spanish URLs - Special Characters
I'm adding spanish to my site. Spanish often has accents
over the letters. Look at the URL on this page. http://www.norcalcars.com/Articles-S...3vilCuota.aspx
The o has an accent over it. This accent appears to be part of the normal spanish spelling of the word. When I add it to the URL, it at times shows up in a browser as an o with the accent over it, at times it has this %C3%B3.
From an SEO point of view, is this likely to confuse the browsers? If I do it as a normal o without the accents will Google understand this as the same word as with the accents.
Anyone have any experience with this?

Webmaster Tools Displaying urls that Don't Exist
I have a question for which I am hoping someone can shed some light on for me.
In my webmaster tools, in the overview section, it is telling me I have 2 urls ‘not found’. See below:
http://www.business-trader.com.au/addvertise.php
http://www.business-trader.com.au/bu...sesforsale.php
The thing is, these urls do not even exist, so why are they displaying here as 404’s?

Space between header and body
I'm a newbie on this forum and relatively new to web design too, so please don't shoot me down in flames if this has been asked here before or is something so obvious! I have searched and can't find much else so here is my question:
I'm designing a new website which has a header with rollover images below it and a bar below the rollover images. All lines up nicely here, but below that I'm trying to get the body to move up so it appears one with the bottom of the rollover images section.
I'm using Dreamweaver, done with tables. For the life of me I can't get rid of the gap between the last rollover images in the header and the body. I gave tried splitting the cells in the table, tried adding a new table beneath, all with the same result, that damn gap!
DANG, it's not allowing me to post my code here for spam reasons.
Any help will be appreciated.

http or www
My domain name is a bit of a mouthful so for ease of typing and also to include in the glass of my logo I bought the name www.pb-n.co.uk not for SEO purposes at all just that people may remember it easier, quicker to type etc.
I have had the company who hold my server 301 redirect it to my home page and today it took effect, however will it effect my seo in Google whether the page it points to is http://myhomepage or http://www.myhomepage ?

Key Takeaways from SES NY 2009
As always, SES New York proved to be a great show for everyone. We were able to get a lot of compelling interviews that were full of actionable information just as we always strive to do. We also saw a positive response from the other attendees. To get the perspective of SES, we caught up with Kevin Ryan to get their feedback first-hand.
