I like to think to think that as I continue
to write for WPW, I'll provide insightful reads
to your day. Encouraging thoughtfulness is a good
thing, but sometimes you should just sit back
and laugh...
Today's chuckle comes by way of...wait for it...
the Associated Press. Man, they're really staying
in the limelight this week. If you didn't read
about the AP's prior shenanigans, read
this newsletter.
If you thought the AP's lashing out against inbound
links from search engines was outrageous, wait
until you hear this. The AP now has an ax to grind
with YouTube. That doesn't sound too
surprising, does it? So, are people taking AP's
video content and masquerading it as their own?
Oh, if only it were that simple. I'll allow the
tweet of Frank Strovel, an employee of an AP affiliated
radio station, and lead character of the story
to tell the tale...
"I was on the phone arguing w/ AP today.
We were embedding their YouTube vids on our station's
site. We're an AP affiliate"
The official story is being reported
on TechCrunch and it's quite an amazingly
funny read. To expand on Strovel's tweet; the
AP sent WTNQ-FM (Strovel's station) a cease-and-desist
order for the videos they were using on their
website. So, now we need to use deductive reasoning
to find out why they sent the order. Of course,
that's like using reasoning to figure out Peter
Griffin's actions on Family Guy.
More than likely the story has a boring plot twist
behind it. Whoever found the AP videos probably
didn't realize that the AP had a YouTube Channel.
Therefore, they thought someone was posting their
content online without permission. Which goes
to show that incompetence is one of the first
steps to failure. That doesn't mean we can't have
a good laugh at it though... ;-)

Authorize.net and AVS
I'm having a problem with authorize.net and I'm hoping someone has an idea on how to fix it.
On our website, we have integrated authorize.net into our shopping cart (using their Advanced Integration Method - AIM). When a customer clicks the final submit button, we do a real-time "authorize only" event on their credit card. We also have the address verification system (AVS) turned on. Authorize.net attempts to do the card authorization first, and if that succeeds, then they do the address verification. So what happens is sometimes a legitimate customer will put in the wrong billing address (e.g., moved recently, used work address instead of home address, etc.), which will result in a transaction being declined. However, in reality, the authorization on their card was approved, but since the AVS was declined, the overall status of the transaction from our end results in a decline. If a customer is using a debit card, the bank will withdraw the money immediately upon authorization, even if the AVS fails, because the authorization is done first. What we end up with are customers that never actually completed a sale, but still showing that we charged their card, or completed sales with duplicate transactions. These pseudo-charges can take up to 30 days to be removed from the customers account by the bank, and there is nothing we as a merchant can do to speed up the process....

redirecting dynamic urls in htaccess
I am currently working on a property website and have after years of working with asp and windows decided to take the plunge and develop this site using php on linux primarily because of the benefits offered by htaccess.
Having not had very much experience of htaccess I have managed to work out how to rewrite the urls for a couple of the pages to something that is more seo friendly. Next I would like to setup a 301 redirect from the dynamic query version to the rewritten version so as to capture any external referrals to the query version. The problem is I am struggling to work out the htaccess syntax that does this.
