WebProWorld Members,
It's always sad to see the death, or retirement
of a legend. I can remember when Dean Smith retired,
and the hearts of the UNC fanbase died a little.
Now another legend looks to be retiring...
Microsoft Encarta.
Ok, so there's a difference between Dean Smith,
and Encarta but they're both gone retired,
that is certain. It was announced yesterday via
NYT that Microsoft decided to scrap the encyclopedia.
With Wikipedia controlling 97% of the visits to
online encyclopedias, and Encarta only obtaining
a little over 1%...it wasn't much of a shocker
to see it happen.
It's obvious to see why Wikipedia put Microsoft
out of commision. As fast as entries can be created,
edited, or deleted there was no way Encarta could
keep up. Even if the information was more reliable
than what Wikipedia provides.
The exiting of Encarta is important for two reasons.
First, is for personal/nostalgic reasons. I remember
first booting up Encarta and I was mesmerized
by the free flowing information. It's easy to
impress an 8 year old though. Not only could you
read about dinosaurs, there were videos, sound
bytes, and games. The information became interactive.
You probably don't want to hear too much about
my personal memories of Encarta, so let's discuss
the second reason that its retirement is important.
Information integrity.
To give Wikipedia credit, I'd say that 'most'
of what is posted on there is accurate. The community
following Wikipedia, and the people that actually
work for it are deep in its involvement. Still
though, it's not academically accurate.
It's easy to get caught up in the current Web
2.0 world, where information flies around at megabits/sec.
Perhaps though, with Encarta's departure we can
take time to remember that integrity, and quality
is just as important as speed.
So, as we move on a bit wiser, and hopefully better
off we say...
R.I.P Encarta..I mean goodbye

IE8 and its 'Compatibility View'
Hello everyone,
I tried searching for this topic first, but I didn't find any.
I would like to read your opinions about Internet Explorer 8's 'Compatibility View' and how it has affected your websites.
In my case, we have received only a couple of complaints (for now) about our website displaying incorrectly in IE8, so I've been replying back with the solution of making IE8 use its 'Compatibility View' feature.
I don't understand the guys from Microsoft and this 'Compatibility View' concept. In my opinion, I feel they're making the W3C and entire rest of the Internet look like idiots because if a website doesn't show correctly in IE8 then it's not built right.
¬¬... please.
I also think that they had to include that Compatibility View' feature because, of course, IE8's default rendering engine... well, is not compatible, thus, users complain because some websites they visit don't display properly.
We now have three of Microsoft's browsers to tackle: 6, 7 and now 8.
Why? What have we done wrong to deserve this?
--
What are your thoughts and experiences with IE8 and its 'Compatibility View' feature?

www.crime-information.com/
Hi - I need opinions on my blog www.crime-information.com please.
I am particularly wondering about the placement of the categories, recent comments, recent comments - layout stuff.
I have tons of outbound links on the index page according to a link checker and am not sure if that's okay or not.
One last thing is I wondered about how many posts per page to use. I had 4 and switched it to 5??
Thanks!

Qube 3 (Linux Sun Cobalt) FTP Server (ProFTPd) not running. Can't get it running
Just recently I discovered that the FTP server (ProFTPd) on the Qube 3 is not running. In the status panel I get a red dot (problem) and in the message it says: FTP server not running. Nothing more in detail. The Qube is web-based. So I was going through the log files by telnet (I don't know what files I have to look at exactly but I discovered in (var/log) some message that tracks my attention. See below. Could anybody give me a possible solution or where to look? As far as I know port 21 was in use voor FTP. I did not changed that. But the error says (last line) that port 21 is in use. How can I see what services uses port 21? Any ideas how to get the FT server running again. See log file:...

Great Quality Score but No Ad Showing !
I have setup a new campaign about 10 days ago at Adwords for some keywords related to travel nitche.
I have a keyword for which my Quality Score (QS) is 8/10 but still my AD showing is stating 'NO'.
What could be the reasons of my ADs being not showing despite of a great QS? May be the keyword I am targeting is not being searched frequently? Or is there something else I am missing?
My keyword is present in the Title of the Ad Group and it is a broad match.
