WebProWorld Members,
Yesterday, the main topic of discussion on WebProWorld,
and I'd say across the vast reaches of the internet
was the release
of IE8 (Internet Explorer 8).
Since the release of IE8, I've been able to put
it through the paces. Overall, I've come away quite
impressed (shocking I know). I can honestly say
I haven't used Internet Explorer for my normal browser
since before Y2K. Ok, maybe not that far back.
When you generally talk to people 'in the know'
about the internet, you'll rarely see them smile
when talking about IE... Designers?
There's not even a frown, just barbaric anger. If
you've ever designed a site, and tested it for browsers
it generally goes like this: Firefox - Fine, Safari
- Fine, Google Chrome - Fine, IE - Is this even
my code?
I can't speak to the changes in terms of code, and design but Microsoft has added some features and changes to the interface worth checking out.
When you first load up IE8, you'll see some subtle changes to the layout and interface. It reminds me a bit of Google Chrome. Keeping it simple, and adding to screen space while getting rid of the countless bars that were there before.
The biggest addition to the browser, is their selectable text interaction. Let's say you see an address on a webpage, if you highlight it and click on the box above you'll have the option of viewing a map without leaving the page. If you highlight simple text, you can gain access to numerous Microsoft Live functions (blog, email, search).
Overall, I'm very impressed with the visual, and features updated with IE8. You won't see an increase in speed. To be honest though, I think after 5/Mps bandwidth browsers have very little to do with loading times. You can still benchmark browsers, but we're generally talking load time differences of 1-2 seconds or maybe less. Therefore, if you think you'd get great use out of the Windows Live tools you might get some great use out of IE8.

Duplication of Meta Information
By default our site does not change the meta information on category pages when
they extend. As a result I get all sorts of warnings in
the CP from big G telling me that this is bad. As an example,
recycled
totes page 4 and recycled
totes page 5 both are listed as having duplicate content
because the page 4 and page 5 doesn't appear in the meta
title or description I put it here for emphasis.
Are these warnings anything to worry about in terms of performance? I imagine this must be a pretty common situation.

Quotations - What Do You Use To Produce Quotes For Potential Customers?
Hi Guys,
Just wondering what (if any) software you all use for producing quotations for potential clients. I've downloaded the free version of Sage, which seems fine for invoicing. However, the quotations feature of this program is very limited, it only allows one line of detail for each item on the quotation. Considering each quotation will be unique, with possibly pages of detail for the one item, Sage just doesn't cut it.
I'd be really interested to hear what you guys use.
I have developed something myself, an Access front end hooked up to a MySql database on my web server but was hoping to find maybe a browser-based tool I could use. Also if it interacted with Sage at least on the Customer Detail level that would be a bonus.
Thanks in advance guys,
Darren.
