WebProWorld Members,

So what do you guys think about soldiers having to shut down their blogs when told to do so by a higher ranking person? I just got to thinking about it when I read this WebProNews story. I guess the same type of thing happens in work situations, if an employee is blogging about their boss or co-workers. What do you think? Has it happend to any of you all?

Our featured post today comes from tony_v who wonders about directories versus blogging. He wants to know which is better, buying a listing in a directory, or buying an article in a relevent blog? Or is it wise to go with both? Is buying inbound links bad according to Google? Does this mean that paying to have articles write about your site in their blog linking back to your site is also considered a bad practice? Share your thoughts! Click here!

As for the remaining three post, the first has an iFrame question. The second needs help with redirects. And the third wants to know if sitemap.xml is illegal.

Directory's vs Blogging
Directory's vs Blogging

Used to be the big talk was on getting your websites listed in directory's for the inbound links. I looked at it as not only inbound linking, but from a relevant source if your link is placed in the right category within the directory. If fact supposedly the higher the pr of the directory the better positioning you are supposed to gain in google. Not sure I beleive that part though because most of the pages within the directory usually hold a 0/10 ranking. As of late however, within the past year it seems there has been much discussion about google penelizing buying links. I mention buying links because a lot of the higher ranking directorys do charge for a listing. Not sure if that ever got worked out or not?

As another source for link backs to your site I am discovering a lot of websites are paying to have articles written in blogs of relevency and much including anchor text linking back to the site they are paying to have written about.

iFrame Parent Querystring

I don't know if this can be done in asp or if I need to figure out a script to do this, but I have an iframe and I need to call the value of the parents querystring.

this is the connection I have, which doesn't call the parents url.

WHERE videoid = "&request.querystring("vid")&"

From what I've found this can only be done using javascript, I have very limited knowledge of javascript and people recommend using

alert(parent.location.search)//querystring
alert(parent.location.href)//full-path url including querystring

So how do I incorporate that with

Permanent Redirects

Just a curiosity question really.

2 months or so ago, i had a site redesigned and some content was moved to new URLs. as an example on the original site all URL requests went through the index page and then parameters displayed the correct content, now most pages have their own URL.

In the new index page we have redirects for the old URLs to the new pages ie.

index.asp?mode=news&newsID=264

Now redirects with the following code.

Sitemap.xml - Is This Illegal?

My client has a car supplies website, and covers all areas of the UK.

To reinforce this to his customers, he wanted to show a clickable map (UK) on the homepage, linking to all counties in England. (Roughly 80). And then once you drilled down into a county, he wanted to show all of the towns/cities in that county, and make them all clickable.

Once you clicked on a town/city it took you to a standardised template page, that would then list some template text such as.......

XXXXXX Parts & Accessories We cover all areas of the UK, including XXXXXX. We supple automotive parts and supplies to XXXXXX with fast next day delivery. Previous customers from XXXXXX have recommended our products and you can read some of their reviews here. blah blah etc etc....
