WebProWorld Members,
More from the 25th Annual ACCM Conference in Orlando, Fl. Mike McDonald talks to Larry Becker of the Rimm-Kaufman Group about how effective your website is. This week we will provide more information on brand development, online marketing, and a variety of other topics. Stay tuned for more updates at WebProNews.com.
Our featured post today comes from fpeter. He discusses how to combat form and comment spam. To weed out the spammers he suggested splitting the email address field into two. Then reject the data if these fields get two email addresses, this would presumably be spambots.
As for the remaining posts, the first wonders what problems could he encounter using 301 mod_rewrite? The next post wants to know if it is possible to hyperlink using HREF to a dynamic URL? Our final post today is planning to soft launch a new site using a sub domain but is not sure if it will impact their SEO.

Combat Spam
Thank you to everyone who answered my questions on my other post, the answers were excellent although some of them a bit beyond me to impliment.
Having thought about form and comment spam in a different way over the past few days I have come up with some ways to try and combat this.
I'm not sure if any of these will help or not but here goes with the ideas I had.
Spammers want to populate your forms with fake email addresses and links to website etc.
What if you split the email address field into two, the first field for the email address up to but not including the "@" symbol, the second field for the part after this symbol.
You could always add an image of the "@" symbol in the middle of these two fields so not to confuse visitors.
Then you would need to check for the "@" symbol in these fields and reject the data if present, presumably if spambots fill these fields you would get two email addresses and the "@" symbol in both.
For the web addresses you could always write the www part before the form field or even have an image of this and then check if that is added to the field and reject the data also.
A problem could be autofill and programs like Roboform etc that will populate these fields, Is there a way to disable autofill on forms?
How would you impliment any of these if they are are worth adding?
Hope I've at least given you something to think about and I apologise in advance if it's a bit vague.

Search Engine Optimization Forum What problems could I encounter using 301 mod_rewrite?
I have a site that currently has over 300 pages. This site has been built using standard HTML. I am thinking about converting the site using Joomla.
The site has quite good rankings in search engines so I am going to use mod_rewrite (via the admin control panel) to set up 301 redirects to try and keep them.
My question is - am I likely to encounter any problems with the .htaccess file and the 300+ redirects contained within? Is there a maximum size for a .htaccess file? Would multiple requests for different pages at the same time cause problems? I have asked my hosting company and they have said there should be no problem, but I would like some further advice before I proceed.

Web Programming Discussion Forum How to HREF a Dynamic URL?
I wonder is it possible to hyperlink using HREF to a dynamic URL? I've created a eNewsletter for my client and hope to hyperlink to some of the web pages but the website is built using ASPX.
The website is advantage and the sections I tried to link to are the "What's New". The 4 pages show the same URL so I guess there is no way I could directly link to it. Anyway it gave me error when I tried to do so.
Could anyone kindly enlighten on this? Many thanks in advance.

Search Engine Optimization Forum SEO and Beta Sites
We are planning to go for a soft launch using a sub domain as well as keeping the old version of the site on the actual domain. We will redirect 1 in 10 users to the new version of the site located at the sub domain in order to pick up any technical or user experience problems. We will then stop using the subdomain and the DNS server will point to the actual domain once the soft launch is over.
We will have some pages with same content on both the actual and the sub domain but since we make use of the sub domain the URLs are going to be different.
I was wondering what sort of an impact that may have on our SEO results and what would be the best approach or advice to minimise the negative impacts of this situation if there are any.
