WebProWorld Members,

So, as you already know Tiffany and some other co-workers are attending 25th annual ACCM Conference in Orlando, Fl. Here is a video of Mike McDonald introducing the conference. This week they will provide information on brand development, online marketing, and a variety of other topics. Stay tuned for more updates at WebProNews.com.

Our featured post today comes from caravan. He discusses the key skills a good SEO must have. He comes from a design/technical orientated background, and considers himself weak in writing and content development. He wants to know what aspect of SEO should he focus on to gain a better skill set.

As for the remaining posts, the first wonders if links from blog posts worth the effort, or not? The next post wants to implement some more advanced personalization features, so he has been logging visits to his main site. Our final post today asks what would you do if Yahoo became the new Google?

Key Skills a Good SEO Must Have

Key Skills a Good SEO Must Have
For the past few years I've become more and more interested in SEO, it's in's and out's, and all the twists and turns involved in it. As part of my job as a web designer/developer I also undertake the search engine optimisation for quite a few of our clients.

As I originate from a design/technical orientated background I therefore consider my strengths to lie in the technical aspects of on page optimisation, usability, accessibility and my understanding of off page techniques. However, I feel my weak area is in the writing and content development side of things, an area which I consider to be an important factor for a websites optimisation and continued development.

I'm therefore wondering what other people think are the key qualities/factors that make a successful seo or search engine marketeer? Should an seo worth their weight in gold have a hands on technical knowledge, or be articulate in content development/article writing, or should they have a good knowledge general marketing techniques and practices? In order to develop my seo skillset should I be worrying about refining my writing skills or focusing my energies on areas which I'm good at and sub contract out the content development to those who are specialists in this field.

Site for Review www.murano-store.com

I work for months last year on my new site that is: www.murano-store.com. Im not an expert, I tried to raise my site ranking with these keywords: murano glass, murano art glass, murano venice, murano glass chandeliers, murano gifts, presents, murano glass jewelry... But I can see that google doesn't consider my site with these keywords. Why not?

Are Links from Blog Posts Worth the Effort?

I am involved with link building for a couple of clients and regularly post on industry blogs on their behalf. This does bring them some direct traffic but it's minimal. I am analysing whether the time spent by me would be better spent on content creation...

Now most blog comments have nofollow added to them is posting on blogs worth it? I know i will get a chorus of "do it for the traffic" but to be honest i have seen very little traffic from the blogs which i post on. This raises the question of whether it is worth the time to do this?

Do people think that the nofollow attribute completely discounts the link or does it just stop PR transfer? Does no follow link text still have an effect on SERPs and semantics?

Also, what (if any) is the difference between rel="nofollow" and rel="external nofollow"?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Editing User Agent Strings for Logging

I have been logging visits to my main site as part of a test to eventually implement some more advanced personalization features on the site. However, I have noticed that Internet Explorer user agents tend to contain a lot of extra (and seemingly useless) data. For example:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; FunWebProducts; SLCC1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30)

When I try to run summary reports, the various .NET CLR and FunWebProducts and SV codes add a lot of extra noise. Is there a way I can eliminate these from the query string before storing it in the database? The SLCC1 and FunWebProducts are easy enough, but the .NET CLR can be listed numerous times in a single string, and they always seem to have different values. Can anyone suggest an appropriate regular expression that would remove this text?

Also, as an extra project, is there an SQL function (for MySQL) that would rewrite the stored user agents without the .NET CLR codes?

What would you do if Yahoo! became the new Google?

I posted a topic back in 2005 where I warned people that Yahoo! would eventually take over as the relevant result search engine. I also told people that Yahoo would end up somehow partnered with Microsoft (people laughed at me) and look at the recent takeover attempt by Microsoft.

Well, the Microsoft takeover may be over "publicly" but there is behind the scenes stuff going on. It will still happen. At the same time what if everyone learned that Google was in fact NOT as relevant as people thought it was and they started using Yahoo! ALLOT more?

What effect would this have on your business and marketing tactics?
